Default Bed Cap Advice, New Home for Peragon

Well, we went ahead and got another boxer. Now, I need a way to haul them in the bed instead of the backseat. I don't like the looks of a bed cap, but I have no choice. I think it'll look okay if it looks more like a suburban with matching color and flush all way around. I looked around and Lee makes one that looks pretty nice.

Could you guys please post pics of your bed cap. Also, what's the going rate for one of the fiberglass ones with flush side windows. I received a quote of $2k for one and thought it was a bit on the high side.

I currently have the peragon cover and love it. I'll have to sell it, PM me if interested, I'm in the Columbus OH area.

I have an ARE on mine. I got the one in the link with the high back end but not the two side windows. Mine only has one full length window on each side and front slider window.
It cost me about $1550.

I've had both Leer and Snug Top. Liked the Snug Top better but on both the windows leaked and the local dealer for some reason couldn't figure it out. They both worked well with a "bed rug". Both were in the 1250-1500 range.

Lust got capped this week. I bought the truck, in December, with the intent of putting the shell on, ASAP. Wouldn't have my truck any other way. No way in hell any dog, I have 2 Rottweilers, is setting a single paw in my Cab. Bed is theirs, cab is mine. Here is a shot of the Leer 100XQ on my 2012 QC, their top of the line shell. Total cost, after $100 off and the free remote lock/unlock (both current specials) plus the few extras I wanted, $2374 installed. IMO, the truck looks complete now and WAY better than without the shell. This leer shell lines right up with the window line of the truck. It really looks good and functions as I intended it to.

Default cab

Here's mine, its a LEER. I had a roll n lock on my last truck which was fine but it had its draw backs. I put the cab on the RAM and I like it way more. I laid some nice indoor/outdoor carpet in the bed, my dogs travel just fine inside.

I'd think some vent windows would be good for the dogs so that they don't overheat.

Leer XQ on my 2010. Top of the line model with LED interior lights, auto locking handle, rug lined inside. The fit and finish is very nice. Thought it matched and lined up nice with the rest of the truck. I have to haul expensive medical equipment that cannot get wet or dirty and have had this on for about 12000 miles so far with no issues.
And both side windows fully vent out for air

A couple considerations. I do not know if this is still true on the current generation of trucks, but years ago I recall reading of a deadly problem transporting living beings in the bed of a truck with a cap. Apparently, at least then, truck exhausts were not shielded under the bed, since they were under "an open space". Enclosing the bed with a cap puts humans and animals at risk for asphyxiation. The article pointed to a couple instances where people sleeping in the bed of a capped truck while in motion, arrived dead. So this may or may not still be the case, but If it were me, I would do some research to see if the exhausts are adequately shielded under the bed. A second consideration is, in an emergency manuever, ie. quick stop, hard acceleration or sharp turn, your dogs will be like loose gear flying around and be at tremendous risk for injury. Personally I would not transport my dog this way. Just some food for thought.

Back in the 70's before 4 door pickups my parents would routinely have me my 3 younger siblings and the dog ride in the back with a cap the only problem we ever had was when my 2 brothers were wrestling and one of them sliced his hand open on a saw. Heck we used to lay in the truck camper's bed over the cab looking out the window.Add in the fact that there were no child car seats at the time it's a wonder all 7 of us kids are alive lol

That may be the reason some States have laws about where the exhaust dumps or exits
In California, i believe the laws reads, the exhaust has to exit behind the cabs passenger compartment. If people are in the bed of the truck, they Shall have seat belts & a properly mounted seat.
To my thinking, this would then become a passenger compartment & the exhaust would have to exit in back of the shell or cap
I have seen exhaust pipes exit behind the rear wheels & wonder if a full size camper has to follow the same rules, you know people are in it
