Default Yet Another question about Magnaflow and MDS

I have a 2012 Ram with the 5.7 liter hemi and I love it. I have been wanting to do a muffler replacement for a magna flow and have of course seen all the info about mufflers, MDS, and the resulting annoyance. A lot of people say they are more sensitive to the MDS kicking in with a louder muffler like a magna flow or flowmaster and others say it isn't that bad. I suppose I should get to my question. I can tell when the MDS kicks in in my truck (it isn't that bad) but I do not really hear it. I feel it in the gas pedal. This is not a flaw as I have a strong V8 truck and when it drops to a V4 it is slightly noticeable. I would assume a magna flow would flow better, cause less resistance to the engine, and therefore the engine would be less noticeable through the gas pedal whether it was running on 8 cylinders or 4. I would think this would translate into feeling MDS less and hearing it more, but that may not be the case. So my questions for anyone out there who has put a magnaflow on there truck are: 1) Is the MDS a lot more noticeable now than when it was stock? 2) If so, is it just the sound that is annoying or can you actually "feel" MDS more now than you could before?

I may not be asking this right but hopefully everyone gets my drift. My wife has a Honda Odyssey and I can feel it through the gas pedal also. It is not a problem with either vehicle, but when MDS kicks in in my truck I can tell it with my foot. I realized this by the fact that when I am in cruise control I cannot tell the MDS at all. It is just the nature of a V8 that goes down to 4 cylinders. I just do not want to put a muffler on if I am gonna feel MDS more. Hearing it I could care less about. And I like my MDS on the interstate so I am not gonna buy a tuner. Thanks so much for reading this monotonous opus of mine and I appreciate all comments on the matter. Thanks folks!

Buy a Diablosport Trinity so you can turn MDS off and not have to worry about it.

I have a truck with the single exhaust and had a true duel system put on. The muffler is the magnaflow with the X-pipe inside the muffler and have no resonators. When the MDS kicks in you can hear it, but you also feel it as in a lot of reverb/drone. When I'm in town its real bad so I put it in manual mode. On the highway it does not bother me. I am thinking about buying some resonators and having them put on.

What you are feeling in the gas pedal is the vibrations from the exhaust when in MDS mode. Pedal is throttle by wire, no cable to throttle body.
Most of the restriction in exhaust is in the cats. Stock muffler is made for most fuel economy, and is not that restrictive. This comes from Mopar Direct Connection. They also say, if you want high end performance change to a freer flowing "system".

MDS isn't on when you are romping the gas.....the only time you will hear it is a steady cruise between 40-45 and 65 ish

Timmy, I have heard others say that the 18 with the resonators on works pretty well and I think I am pushing in that direction. Is the MDS any better or worse than it was before you put the magna flow 18 on?

oldhp, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I never really thought of it that way, but I am not the most mechanically inclined either.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Fozman, thanks for the input. It seems that the guys who have left the resonators (or added them) have dealt with a lot less drone/reverb. At least from what I have seen anyway.

Default 18" Maggy with resonators

Yeah I have a welded-in 18" Magnaflow with stock piping/resonators still in place. It only ran 156 dollars for me (106 for the muffler, 50 for welding). I've had it for a couple of months, sounds great! When MDS kicks in you sound like it is under water, or I've heard it described as a helicopter sound. However, in the cab it is not noticable.

Off-topic: Timmy where did you get your exhaust work done, I'm thinking about getting the Y-Pipe done, or a Magnaflow Tru-X with duals!
