Default transmission problems... i think...

i recently heard a loud knocking sound from what i think is the transmission... let me try to explain what happened. on a cold morning i went to startup my truck to run some errands but i did not let it get up to temp. once i put it into reverse to pull out of the driveway the truck struggled to back-up (i had to give it gas) then when i put it into drive the truck started to shake and stalled about 10ft. from my driveway. i decided to go back and use another vehicle instead, but when i went up the driveway my truck made this loud cranky knocking noise but did not stall. all i did from there is park it and not move it till recently(waited for the days to get warm again) and the same thing happened.

could anyone help me with this given info.?

thanks in advance

Were there any warning noises before that day ?

It actually sounds like the driveshaft universal joint went bad
it may have nothing to do with your problem, but i ALWAYS set my Emergency Brake, before putting my vehicles in Park & on any kind of a grade

no warning lights... but now it seems to be popping in and out of gear when ever it feels like it.

By "popping in and out of gear," do you mean like going to Neutral and then engaging again? What does your PRNDL display show when this happens?

When you say "PRNDL shows nothing," do you mean it goes completely blank, or do you mean it shows PRND21 but doesn't indicate which one you're in, or do you mean it continues to show the highlight around "D" (i.e. no change from normal)?

OK, so does the neutralling out seem to be random, or is it only in certain gears, or only when you step into the throttle (more torque)?

When it engages again, does it thump in solidly / firmly, or does it always feel like it's just on the verge of slipping? And once it engages (after slipping), does it stay in one gear until you come to a stop, and after that starts off in 1st gear and then shifts directly to 3rd and stays there?
