So with the codes I have, what would be a good place to start with fixing these? (Besides, of course, driving it off a cliff. This is not an option
I should also the performance issues I am having. The truck seems to run fine until I come to a stoplight or stop sign. When I press the gas to resume driving, the vehicle tries to die. (I should also note, it has died once since I have driven it. The truck lurched forward after I restarted it and resumed "normal operation".)

This is what I came up with:
A code P0132 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•The oxygen sensor heater circuit is shorted out
•The wiring to the sensor is broken / frayed (less likely)
A code P0135 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•O2 Heater element resistance is high
•Internal short or open in the heater element
•O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
•open or short to ground in the wiring harness
A code P0138 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•Faulty O2 sensor
•Short to battery voltage in O2 sensor signal circuit
•High fuel pressure (not as likely)
A code P0141 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•open or short to ground in the wiring harness
•O2 heater circuit wiring high resistance
•O2 heater element resistance is high
•Internal short or open in the heater element
A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•Faulty spark plugs or wires
•Faulty coil (pack)
•Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
•Faulty fuel injector(s)
•Burned exhaust valve
•Faulty catalytic converter(s)
•Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
•Faulty camshaft position sensor
•Defective computer
A code P0302 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•Faulty spark plug or wire
•Faulty coil (pack)
•Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
•Faulty fuel injector
•Burned exhaust valve
•Faulty catalytic converter(s)
•Running out of fuel
•Poor compression
•Defective computer
A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
• a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
•the camshaft position sensor may have failed
•the PCM may have failed
•there exists an open circuit
•the crankshaft position sensor may have failed
P0740 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction
P0783 3-4 Shift Malfunction
P1762 Shift Lock Short to B+
P1763 Shift Lock Open

Thank you Sabin and GT. So with all of these issues, where should I start trying to fix this vehicle?

Here's some food for thought. 1996 was the first year that OBD2 codes were mandatory, and some of the computer systems in 1995-1997 OBD2 cars were a bit idiosyncratic. You may want to erase them all and see what comes back after a few starts and start from there! In other words some of these codes might not even be valid!

I concur with the tinman, if you haven't bought an obdII reader/eraser yet, start with ebay... But for now, turn your key to ignition without the engine running, disconnect the neg battery cable, turn the ignition key off, reconnect the neg cable, and go thru a drive cycle, and re read the codes. I suspect you have less issues than your current codes indicate, at least I hope so. Start by opening your throttle up and looking down the engine intake with a flashlight, if theres oil on the bottom, a good place to start would be pulling the intake and replacing the gasket on the bottom of the intake if theres oily residue down there. That may well be the misfire deal. I have never seen the cam signal missing thing, I suspect that may disappear on a reboot of the ECU. As far as o2 sensor codes go, a good start would be to ensure the wires are connected to the sensors, or that the sensors aren't smashed. The sensor I have dealt with is the one on the passenger side, beneath the cab, on the exhaust pipe. I 'm guessing someone removed it with a shadetree exhaust system... hopefully you still have the wires and connectors on the truck, put one on, get the weldment for it from a muffler shop, and weld it on the pipe, after the converter, if I remember right, but point it sideways, so it doesn't get ripped off by sticks and tall grass, etc. If you get this far, post again...
