Default Determining lift size/type and length of shocks

I bought my '96 already lifted, it looks to be about 3". How do I determine the amount of lift? What's the difference between a lift kit and a leveling kit? I can see some coil spacers in the front, and it has blocks in the back, the truck sits a little higher in the rear. I need to order new shocks, but I have to assume that stock sized ones won't work. The front shocks would be hard to measure for length, but the back ones would be easy, are the front and back the same length?

Edit: I am looking at Rancho RS5000, Pro Comp ES3000, Rough Country nitro 9000, Skyjacker Hydro 7000. I'm leaning towards the Rancho's, any experiences, good, bad or otherwise with any of these makes and models of shocks? Anything I need to consider besides price? Any suggestions for other makes/models? I'm trying to stay around 200 or less for all 4. (less is better )

Easiest way to figure out what size shock you will need is (as long as the current shocks are adequate) to remove a front & a rear shock, and you measure the length fully collapsed and the length fully extended from eye lit to eye lit. Once you have your measurements you can order shocks from any manufacture you like, all the Brands you named are good brands, I dont know to much about Rough Country, so it prob. depends on how much $ you want to spend.

Thanks Ramsport, the problem with that method is the condition of my current shocks. They are rusted bad, this means to get them off I'm going to use my trusty grinder with cut off wheel. This is my main truck so I can't really do with out it while waiting for new shocks to arrive. (98 has a camper on it and sold my Dakota a couple weeks ago)

If I measure the blocks in the back, and spacers in the front will this give a range of lift? Most of the shocks I've looked at cover a range IE: fits trucks with 1-3" lift. I think the Skyjackers cover 1-5" of lift.

Oookaay...Guess no one around here knows the answer to my questions so I'll answer them myself. I measured the coil spring spacer in the front and it's 3" tall, so my best guess is a 3" lift. I ordered shocks accordingly. Thanks I guess.

Default Same Problem

I am having the same problem trying to find the right shock size for my truck. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just something to make my truck stop rocking when I pull to a stop sign. My truck is leveled off with 4" spacers on the front springs and 3" blocks on the back. If you find anything useful on this subject, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know.

If you can't measure your shock or know how much lift you have and how much travel you want in the shock its hard to determine the shock you need. On a 3" coil spacer lift you might have the factory shocks in there still. They will just fit and will be maxed out so measuring them would be no good because you would want a longer shock. I would say do exactly what you did and measure the spacer and order a shock for a 3" lift. Good luck.
