Default 2013 Dodge Ram Regular cab Hemi w/ 8 spd transmission

I have been looking at the 2013 Dodge Rams Regular cab Hemi and they currently only come with the 6 speed transmission right now. Is it worth waiting for the 8 speed transmision or just get the 6 speed? I'm hearing some time in February one can order a Ram Regular cab Hemi w/ 8 spd auto. And is there a big enough difference between the 6 and 8 spd transmission to justify the wait because I'm hearing they are going to take orders in February but wont manufacturer them until spring or so? I don't mind waiting to long that gives me more time to save up for one. And finally is the upgrade stereo option in the Ram worth the price? Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you... I'm waiting for a factory order 2013 Express Regular Cab Hemi w/ 8-speed and the Uconnect 5.0 radio option... should be well worth the wait.

I don't plan on trading my 2011 in but I would love to take a look at it.

Thanks for my first reply back. I'm waiting to hear from my dealer on when I can order a regular cab HEMI SLT w/ 8 spd and about how long it will take to get it. By the time I order one I hope to settle on a color. I'm so use to getting red but feel like trying another color, True Blue Pear Coat or back to Red.

Update, I did more research on the new 8-speed and decided to just go with the 6-speed. The 6-speed has been around for a while and the bugs have been worked out already. The 6-speed has the same final drive ration as the 8-speed, so for highway driving (which is almost all of my driving) it won't make any real difference in mpg.

What makes the difference is how the transmission shifts to get up to the final ratio

The 8-speed will help if you are towing or doing mostly city driving, but for my needs the current 6-speed works fine. I saved another $1000 off for going with the 6-speed, plus it's a reliable and tested transmission.

We're happy with our six speed tranny. If we go to the big city with alot of stop and go traffic, I just put ours in the Tow/Haul mode and it works better. Keeps it from going into and out of O/D all the time and raises the shift points slightly. It's happy, I'm happy.

There's more to the 8 speed than just starting out in lower gears and better spacing between the gear ratio's,,, (better as in smaller steps between ratios, and those steps are all more equal/consistent than those in the 6 spd)

There's also less parasitic loss with the 8 spd in several gears, including "8th".

Would it be worth an extra $1,000? Eh, dunno. Probably depends on your situation.

Equal money 6 vs 8? I'd wait, but again, everyones situation is different..

I've attached a link to a SAE review of the Thermal Mangement System for your review.
http://www.sae.org/mags/sve/11310/
It sports some pretty impressive comparisons abut how they're achieving fuel improvements.

One thing that will help everyone is the "Active Shutters" that come with (and only) 8 speeds.

The areo difference which we'll really see on the highway justify's for me the $500 add.
At the same time if dealers are trying to move things faster and discounting 6's even more that's another issue.

By the was the ZF8hp70 has been in standard production for 2 years now. No risk there.

Good luck just another input.
