Just want back to all stock today until I figure this out. Check engine light came on when I switched. I think the change in air flow just trips it. Called AFE about the loss of mpg. Waiting for them to call back. With the stock back on I'm back to getting 12 to 14 around town.

I ended up buying the intake system that psm advertised however I learned a lot about different intake systems that are being sold. I also used an AFE dry filter in the stock box. I quess the bottom line at least for me was that the stock system wasn't all that bad unless you are going to go crazy with the mods. Their system worked good for me and for what I was using the truck for but mileage was not one of the things that was #1 on my list.

The 6.7L has a decent intake stock, the 5.9 is horrible IMO.

I just personally think that any Cummins needs to have an upgraded intake.

I won't mind upgrading the intake but I'm disappointed that this one was performing poorly. I'm not planning any other mods. I drive my truck as my primary vehicle, so a little better MPG would be nice. Power wise it was enough. I tow my camper and boat in the summer time and this truck has more than enough ass already to do that. I'll probably put a plow on it next winter, again, not worried about the truck being able to handle it.
I. Reading mixed reviews about weather a CAI is necessary or not. If it gives me a little better performance, without the loss of mpg I'm all in. I'm waiting to hear back from AFE as to why this one was performing poorly. When I took it all apart today, I noticed the intake tube started to pull away from the turbo, when I was trying to put it back, I was not getting a good fit against the turbo, like the silicone piece needs to be a touch longer and tapered. Since I couldn't get an exact fit, I removed the whole system for the time being.

Well, i did the test. I left my stock intake in for one week...my truck is stock otherwise as well.
With the stock intake, was getting 15 MPG ( doing the math, not the trip computer)
Put the aFe intake in for the same time period, getting a solid 12 MPG now.
Numbers speak for themselves, ill be putting the stock intake back in for good.

Weird, I just don't understand it. All of my diesels and my customers diesels have gotten positive results from AFE

only thing i can think of is maybe the resukts are positive, or more noticable with the CAI along with other mods. This is the only mod I have done, and i was suprised when I did the calcuations. Tomorrow I am going to switch back to the stock intack for a week, and do the same thing to double check my numbers, but I already did it once , and when I called AFE, even they said while they dont guarantee better MPG, i shouldnt be losing any, and they didnt have an answer for me. One mechaninc friend of mine said it makes sense, since more air flow in burns more fuel

Where is this "silencer" and how much work is it to remove it?

It's in the intake tube. It's about 1/2 way between the turbo and filter. It takes less than 5 min to remove.
