Default Puzzled by highway MPG

Let me start with a couple of admissions...

Yes, another MPG thread, I apologize.

Yes, I know I bought a truck and I know they are aerodynamic nightmares.

Now, I have the 2016 Outdoorsman, 3.6 4X4 with 8 speed trans. The sticker says 15 city, 23 highway, which I know is nothing more than a fancy guess.

Cruising speeds are great, the EVIC says I get between 20-27 mpg cruising between 45-60 mph. Once I hit the speed limit of 70 on the highway, I am lucky to get 15-17 mpg - is this normal for our trucks? I am using cruise control and it is relatively flat driving on the highway around us. I'm no speed demon, but our speed limit around here is 70, and maybe its a pride thing, but I hate being passed by semi's so I am usually cruising at about 73 or 74. If i dare go to 77 or 78, it tells me I am getting about 13 mpg. Ugh.

Any input is appreciated - thanks guys

How many KM's on your truck. I was reading in the tech training manual that new trucks 'detune' themselves during the break in period and around 3000 miles the ECU clears this option and the truck starts working like it should.

It's possible that the reason you're seeing crappy MPG is because of this.

My 4.7 V8 with 5spd gets 17MPG at 75MPH with a 2" level and 33 all terrains.

I can get 18-19MPG below that speed. So yes I'd say your numbers are a little off.

Also, are you hand calculating your mileage, or going by the EVIC. It's known to be off, perhaps yours is really off...

Wish the 4.7 came with an 8 speed.... that would be a slick engine+transmission combo...

once you get over 60-65 mph the aerodynamic drag on a vehicle really starts to take over, under 60 with my old Dmax I could get 22 mpg, over 65 mph it'd drop like a rock

I wonder if it is the gearing in the Outdoorsman that causes the motor to spin at a much higher RPM than optimal efficiency range? I remember in reading the 3.21 vs 3.55 vs 3.92 thread that the 3.55 is getting rarer and rarer, since you have 4x4 perhaps you have 3.92? There is increased drag going from 60 to 70 mph, but can't be that much to cause the drop in mpgs you are seeing.

Did you calculate by hand to see if your EVIC is miscalulating?

I noticed this as well of late. I found that my TPMS were way off. Check this as a quick fix. They reported 34PSI cold but were actually 20PSI cold. While this condition existed, I averaged 18MPG on a trip from St. Louis, MO to Springfield, IL (very flat, 70 mph)

After correcting this issue, my city driving is now 24-32mpg (35-55 mph) on the EVIC. I'll take it out on the highway today and post that result as an edit to this post.

I'm going off the EVIC for my numbers. I only have about 1700 miles on it. If you guys say 3000 is the break-in, maybe that makes sense. Ive read anywhere on the break-in from 500 to 5000 miles so who knows. I'm kind of a noobie when it comes to trucks, Ive always been a car guy - how do i know what gear ratio I have? I looked on the window sticker and it doesnt say anything...

Maybe you should quit believing the EVIC and do some hand calculations. My EVIC isn't even close. It is highly inaccurate.

I have the 3.55's and I am getting more than that. Now taking into account our gallon is bigger than the US gallon.
I have 24000km(15000 miles) and do keep it below 70mph on hwy.

Hwy mileage 24-26 mpg(10.9L/100km)
City mileage 20 mpg(14.3L/100km)

All of last year 2015 12.6L/100km-22.3 mpg all hand calculated.

Once you break her in yours should go up a bit

I've consistently averaged over 23mpg every tank since new. High 23's to low 24's seem to be the norm. I finished below 23 once at 22.7 and as high as 25 rarely. I've got 16,000+ miles now. My truck is 2wd, 3.55 gears, and at the low end of curb weights. My miles are pretty heavily highway biased, and mostly between 60 and 70 when cruising on the highway.

I've only hand calculated a few times to make sure my EVIC was in the ballpark. I've found my hand calculations to come out any where from a couple tenths to about 1 mpg below the EVIC. It's been a while since I've compared, I'll probably check again to make sure it's still consistent.

I've measured the highway portion of my commute from exit to exit 4 times. Averaging 60mph over the 38ish miles; 3 times I got 29mpg +/- 1. One time was rainy and windy only got about 25.
