Default Best 1/4 mile Shifting Technique with 65RFE?

Hey guys, just traded my 2010 sport in on a 2013 Laramie basically b/c I fell in love with the updated interior. So after searching for awhile, I can't seem to find the best driving technique for the updated 6spd. I know its my old transmission "reprogramed", but whats the best way to ahceive low E/Ts?

Old technique was:
-Tow/Haul off
-Trans in "manual" mode
-Let 1st rev out to redline and the CPU shift automatically
-Once in second, manually slap paddle up to 5th and allow the CPU to automatically shift each gear at redline

So whats the new technique with the 65rfe??

If you have the console you can just hold it to the left and it'll shift through all gears at redline.

The 65rfe in your 2013 shifts 100% identical to the 545rfe in your 2010, there is no difference. So if you were happy with what you did in the 2010 do the same in your 2013. Although I don't believe it makes any difference if you are in ERS mode or in "drive", it should shift the same either way.

Well with the 545rfe, if you left it in the "manual" mode and let the CPU shift at redline, it would shift from 1st-2nd, then 2nd-2nd prime and hold 2nd prime untill the driver shifted out of it. Thats the reason for the "shifting technique" I mentioned above. I'm not sure why the 545rfe did that, but I can def say that it shifted differently in the "manual" mode vs "Drive"

It would also shift out of 2nd prime to 3rd (3rd to 4th for 65rfe nomenclature). It won't over rev, the computer won't let it.

I have no hands on experience with these transmissions other than research on the 545RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE, and the 68RFE. That said and on top of what snrusnak said the 545 and the 65 are the exact same transmissions but with different programing in the TCM. Which btw is located in the PCM (not a stand alone) and has nothing to do with the configuration of either transmission. So to my understanding, you couldn't tell any difference between the two just by looking at them. The only different or new transmission worthy of being considered different is the 66RFE which resembles the 545RFE (uses the same housing) but utilizes some of the beefy 68RFE internals producing more torque/strength and better gear ratios. As much as I hate to say it, Chrysler is MISSLEADING the public with the notion that this (65RFE) is a different and improved transmission over the 545RFE....they are flat out lying! Chrysler has LONG aknowleged over and over that they are well aware of the overall poor performance and most important...poor consumer satisfaction of these transmissions. I'm saying that they are well aware of the hp sucking performance of the gear ratios. There's nothing wrong with quality or in other words they are no worse than any other trans put up against a 400 hp engine. It's just that the gear ratios flat out suck, they rob hp from your engine when compared to the competition. They know it, and they know the cosumers know it. What they need to do is abolish the 545/65RFE in Hemi trucks all together and use the 66RFE and the new eight speed as an option. The gear ratios in the 66RFE are much closer together and it has a 3.23 first gear as compared to a 2.97 in the 545/65RFE and it would help improve fuel milage as well. And to the OP, I wouldn't even use the second gear in this 65fFE to race...I'd skip it. If I manually use it in my 545 it would just slow me down or lower my ET, none the less good luck.

Maybe mine had a programming problem then (2010) because it would not shift out of second prime unless I manually shifted it, or let off the gas.

That's strange. What gearing and tire size did you have? If you had 3.55's and stock ~31" tires shifting out of 2nd prime ~5600rpm would put you at ~100mph+. Not sure why that would be needed unless you had a really fast truck.

I've gotta ask because I just tried this based on what I 'think' you mean.

Are you placing the transmission in ERS '1' (ie manual 1st gear) and having it shift at red line? Or am I completely not understanding what you are saying?

I hold the shifter to the left and go WOT. It will shift 1st,2nd,2ndP then I have to switch to 3rd. It has some limiter but it might be the speed limiter coming into play because that about 100mph.
