My first truck was an '86 Ford Ranger, 2wd, 4-cyl, 5 speed.

For what it was, it did okay on the stock all season rubber, especially considering I was young & stupid and got it into spots where it shouldn't have been in the first place.

For winter, I spooned on light truck/SUV snows on the front and a pair of more aggressive snows on the rear that were supposedly designed for plowing. I also added a couple of burlap sacks of crushed stone to the bed (~100 lbs total). I never got stuck in the snow.

I used to see a guy back then who plowed parking lots and driveways in the winter with a 2wd pick-up. It was a 3/4 ton, had a locking rear diff and he had a lot of weight over the rear axle, but it did the job no problem.

Think about it, most medium duty trucks and larger that get pressed into duty as commercial/municipal snow-plows are rear drive only.

Even now, when plowing with my ATV, at times I've forgotten to put it in 4x4 and usually only notice it when I can't steer as well when pushing or spin when trying to push up a grade. My ATV's actually pushed snow (admittedly not a lot and it wasn't wet/heavy snow) when in turf mode, so the rear diff was open.

Good information fellas. If we ever started getting real winters here in Indiana I would reconsider a new 4x4. I boat a lot and boats are also part of my profession so I am on a lot of steep boat ramps and have never had a problem pulling anything out in my life. It's funny to watch people at boat ramps. I never once had a problem pulling a boat out even with my R/T on gravel ramps.

I had an 03 CC Dakota that was 2wd with a limited slip that did awesome in the snow. I could do circles around my wife's Sorento. If we ever had to go anywhere in the snow, we would cram into mine.

With that being said, my Ram is a 4x4. I do a lot a traveling for work and it never fails that I always end up on the road in the winter when I really shouldn't be. Since I travel to a lot of cell sites, it is nice peace of mind that I will get home.

What the hell is this snow stuff that everyone is talking about????

I moved south, don't have to worry about anything of the sorts... but back when I did, about 50-100 pounds of sands in the bed, and the proper use of my brain usually kept me out of trouble. It was when the brain was not properly functioning that I found myself driving a bobsled
