Default K&N drop-in vs. CAI

Just curious how much better in terms of performance a CAI (excluding Vararam) would be over a K&N drop-in? I'm not talking sound or looks, strictly performance. My thoughts are they would be minimal since the OE setup is basically a "cold air intake" anyway. Looking for REAL gains, not a few CFM or a couple of HP. I'm just trying to justify the cost involved. If someone has evidence to the contrary, please let me know.

You can find info on real numbers provided by the manufacturer here (these are done on their system for the 3rd gens but should be comparable to the 4th gens) look at the flow testing.
http://vararam.com/hemi.html and then you can read the info strait from the manufacturer on the 4th gen setup here http://vararam.com/air-grabber/air-grabber.html

Hope this info helps you in your search for answers

Thanks

I do believe these were done with stock engines, if you are already getting 5's you are not stock so I would say you might shave a little off would not be anywhere near a full half second probably between 1/10 to 1/4 of a second better.

Thanks

I would do it! I would have one on our company vehicle but we are going the forced induction route, so this is not an option for us, however if you decide to go with one do it during our group buy it is going to be the best price for atleast another 2-3 months

Thanks

That's cool about the vararam, but like my original post stated the question was in regards to "traditional" CAI's vs. K&N drop in. Anyone want to comment on this?

First post: this forum is awesome! Tons of info. My Hemi is still stock so I can't speak for our it, but My old GMC with the 4.8 V-8 had better throttle response with a full intake (AEM) vs. the K&N drop-in filter I had in it at first. It's hard to say if it made more power because I never dyno'd it, but it felt slightly quicker. I just bought my 2012 Express last week and the list of mods I want is already pretty long, lol. Exhaust and a Vararam Air Grabber are probably going to be first. Even if the Vararam doesn't give the advertised power gains, the looks alone are worth it for me. Sorry for the long post but I'm still pretty excited about the new truck!
