Default 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 oil/engine issues

My husband just took his truck in to get it fixed. It has a 318 V8 magnum engine. He just had a major tuneup but for awhile now he has been having to add 1 quart of oil every two weeks maybe more. Obviously it is either burning or leaking oil but the mechanic saw no leak and believes it is burning oil. He said it would not be worth replacing the engine and when I asked about getting it fixed possibly he said again it was not worth it even though we have no idea why it is burning oil. My concern is that I want to keep oil in it and make sure it doesn't get too low. My husband says he has been keeping oil in it and the dipstick says it is full but strangely the mechanic said it was 3 quarts low. I'm not sure why he is finding it full but yet it was so low. Any ideas? Thank you

I'll bet my next paycheck that the intake plenum pan gasket is blown. If your "mechanic" is even remotely competent, he should know this either from experience or researching the problem. I almost think this mechanic is trying to put the screws to your husband. Did he happen to offer to buy the truck?

We will have to look into this. I appreciate your help Ramtech. If it is something that can reasonably be fixed I would at least like to know. If your engine is burning oil is it hard to find out what is causing it? I know the mechanic was trying to keep the cost of repairs reasonable but I thought he could at least have given us a little more info other than just doing the wires and distributor cap. He did not ask about buying the car.

Chrysler has a service bulliten regarding this issue. This is a simple repair that any mechanic can do in one day. I won't try to quote you a price because parts and labor vary from area to area. I will tell you that this will also be the perfect time to change the distributor cap, rotor, plugs and plug wires since the intake will be out of the way. You should expect to pay around 4-5 hours of your shops labor rate for the plenum pan and intake gasket repair and another couple of hours if you decide to give it a thorough tune up at the same time. I would recommend getting a new set of intake manifold bolts before beginning as the two front one are prone to breaking during removal.
