Shouldn't have to break lifters in, cam and lifter's are roller type.
After listening to my engine tick, was not crank/rods or piston slap, I used my trusty xtra-long screw driver to ear trick. I came to the conculsion it was lifter/pushrod/rocker arm tick that the Hemi's do. Even after fully warmed up ticking was quieter, but still there.
I use NAPA Synthetic 5W20 oil with Royal Purple oil filter. I wanted to try something.
With engine fully warmed up, 25 miles, I slowly poured in some heated up STP blue bottle. You could hear the ticking going away to a very faint ticking. Over 2200 miles nothing has changed. So next oil change I'm going to mix 3qts NAPA syn 5W20 with 4qts NAPA syn 5W30 and according to the Widman oil mixture chart will have a 5W25 blended oil. Will see and I'll let you know. I just don't like that thin of a oil. I know there are people who run their RAMS many, many miles with no trouble. But it sure quieted down with a thicker oil.

Vman mine makes the same damn noise, 2012 Express. I run a Mopar oil filter with the Royal Purple API certified 5w-20 (I'd like to use the Royal Purple oil filter, but when the POS blows up Chrysler won't be able to blame it on the filter). Look up the forum "Cold Hemi sounds like a diesel," Mezerr's poor truck got all torn apart to be fixed for only a second but now the noise is back. I'm going to let it take corse and see what happens (it truly makes me sick to give in to Chrysler, but they won't do anything), fortunately the truck is covered. When it gets worse or the truck throws a code then the jackass dealer can experiment with my truck - cause they don't have a damn clue! It must be a pain for the dealer to get reimbursed by Chrysler cause most of them don't want to get into this issue.

I could go an all day about this, it really pisses me off(its so embarrassing to show it off)! The dealer says its normal, that doesn't mean that it is manufactured and put together properly. I am not letting the dealer touch my truck until they have to.

My saving grace is to tell everyone that asks how I feel about the truck and all the sounds, and to not buy Chrysler. Although I have had a few other issues to boil my blood, sound at startup, paint is thin and wavy and the hood is a nightmare all tiger striped, blown CV boot, etc. Good luck buddy and let us know how things go!

I got a 2012 and it never makes that noise. We get to -40 here, but anything under -5 and I put the block heater in.
The one day I got caught out and had to start it at -20 and it made a real loud slapping noise as it started. Apart from that nothing.
I wouldn't accept that answer from the dealer. Likely they know what it is an don't want to admit it. Just out of interest what gas do you use? I use 89, and I have heard of a lot of guys using 87 and they got engine knocks after about 10,000kms.
As for oil, I've only had one change so far and I put in synthetic.
Cheers

It's not like I have many choices other then accept their answer looks like.
They were saying in front of me that the other truck 2013 ram they started makes same noise. I told them that it is not the same as mine sounds like more metallic sharper knocking. All I can do is to make them put in writing that when comparing to other vehicle my sounds louder. Wish me luck that they will write that statement.

Looks like customers don't have much too say when it comes to dealer and corporate office people.
Yeah I agree it is under warranty but still..... i hate noises that don't sound normal to me. My 2002 RAM sounded much quieter at 170K miles.

Angry

I'm having the excact same issue ....only noticed it this winter while letting it warm up while snow shovelling, I've had a Ford with over 400,000k, and a chevy with 518,000k and neither of them sounded that bad on star-up...EVER!

Went to my locale dealer, made sure to leave it overnight with the arrangement that the Tech, the manager and myself would start it the following day....well the manager was of course to busy to be there, but the tech did say it was unussally loud, and not normal, they were also to replace weatherstripping on the driver side door cause of windnoise , but guess what...they ordered the wrong side stripping, so I get told that it will all be taken care of next day, and I say "No Thank You" and went and picked up my truck...on the invoice for the motor noise they put that the noise was "NOT SUBSTANTIALL" to warrant any further investigating, so I made them put on my invoice what the tech had said about it being unussually loud, and not normal

I will be contacting Chrysler Canada bright and early Monday morning....

The game has just begun!!!!

Keep us posted. I have Chrysler involved and they assigned case manager to this, but that doesn't mean much as they just go with whatever dealer will tell them. For me I will be requesting them to put in writing exactly what they said that my truck is louder then comparable truck they started.
After that I will be taking it to another dealer and possibly will look into some specialty engine shop for diagnoses.
Perhaps if enough people will complain about same issue, Chrysler may start looking into it ? Good luck with yours. And don't let Chrysler blow you off on the first call like they tried to do to me. If you don't get right answers, ask them to escalate the problem to someone that can assist further.

So on Monday went and made arrangements at another dealer just north of Toronto to do a "Cold Start" in the morning with a Tech and Service advisor present....dropped it off yesterday evening, and this morning we did the cold start, and again the tech deffinatley agrees that the sound is NOT NORMAL and unussually loud and would warrant further investigating, left there at about 8am, got the call at about 2pm today that they will be replacing all the lifters plus the weatherstripping on the driver side door, and would need one more day, and asked me if I could provide proof of at least 2 oil changes and what kind of oil I used....I absolutley do have the paperwork for the four oilchanges I've had to date, but have no idea what type of oil was used, but all the oilchanges were done at the dealer I purchased it from, which is about an hour away....

So I have to say that this dealer has deffinatly stepped up....but not real crazy about having internal engine parts replaced on a relatively new truck....only have 28,000k on it....well on the good side, still a couple of years worth of warranty!
