Default Code P1281 after plenum gasket fix

Hello again -
Thanks for all the advice so far, I did eventually install the Hughes plenum gasket fix and solved all the shuddering-shaking-oil-burning-misfiring problems I had.

Now...about 500 miles later it's throwing a P1281 code. This code doesn't show up in my haynes manual or the code reader manual but internet research tells me it means the engine isn't getting up to operating temperature. I know that the Hughes kit comes with a thermostat that's a lower temp than the factory one, is that causing this or is something else going on?

Also if I keep driving through the winter like this is it going to do damage?

Thanks again all!

The actual code definition is the engine is cold too long, and yes, this is a thermostat related problem. It's could be from being stuck open, broken and not closing, or just too cold of a temp range. Regardless, it needs to come out and I recommend installing one with the factory specified temp range.

Ramtech has it... My 95 throws that code every now and again, tho it's the similar OBD1 equivilant, and when it does, the mileage drops considerably, I think I have the wrong, lower temp 'stat installed, cure it by hanging a shopping bag over the radiator in the winter, helps the semi-worthless heater, too.(Well, it may not be 'right' fix, but it works!) I've got more interesting things to spend my time on, at my age, than replacing thermostats on an 18 year old machine!

I had the same issue when I installed my Hughes plenum kit. I had to replace the thermostat again. The one that came with the Hughes kit was just plain bad out of the box.
