Default Exhaust Options

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I looked through the first few pages and didn't see anything similar unless I overlooked it. I have an 07 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi. My current exhaust setup is an aftermarket muffler, not sure of the brand because it was already on there when I bought the truck, and square tips straight out the back, which I'm not too fond of.

I'm wanting a little bit louder while still keeping the deep sound. I thought of replacing the muffler with a piece of straight pipe. I've heard that straight piping it will cause problems with mileage, performance, etc. because of something to do with backpressure. Anyone have any experience with doing this? Also wanting some ideas for new tips, thinking of angling them out the back.

Thanks in advance for any help!

can you post a pic of the existing exhaust setup? then we can determine which way to go.. you are correct with true dual pipes only, it gives a raspy sound that sounds terrible plus the performance/mileage hit...

I'll try to get a picture this weekend. So if I don't have true duals, which in my understanding is two pipes the whole way with separate mufflers, then a straight pipe won't affect mileage, performance, etc.?

you need to have a muffler in there someplace...it's for scavenging (some call it back pressure)...even straight piping a single will hurt it...are you still running a resonator? some cut the muffler out and use the resonator as a muffler..

Yes, pretty sure there are two resonators between the headers and the cat. I don't know a whole lot about all of this so correct me if I am wrong.

Measure your existing muffler. Go shorter if you want louder. If it's already 14", you can delete the resonators.

Ok, so I must have been thinking of a different truck. My truck has two cats, one just after each header, then the pipes connect, go straight to the muffler, which is a flowmaster about 13" long, then dual out of the muffler to tips, no resonators. First picture is a cat, there's one off each header, second picture is where the pipes connect right after the cats, third picture is the muffler.

I'm thinking either flowmaster super 10 or straight pipe. What do you all think?

If you like the flowmaster sound, put the 10 on it. A lot of happy super 10 owners on here. The straight pipe thing is a myth, most glasspacks and Magnaflows are basically straightpipes. The issue is using the correct size pipe. For these trucks 2 1/4" piping is the best size for duals imo.
