Default My tailgate handle key lock is stuck.

I've been having trouble with my tailgate handle. The key lock seems to be stuck and won't turn with the key inserted. I've removed the access panel and manually unlocked the lever that was keeping my tailgate locked and unable to open with the handle so I can now open the tailgate normally. The mechanism that i put my key in seems to be the problem. If I play with it and wiggle it for a while it sometimes works but then as soon as I try to lock or unlock it goes back to being stuck. I've sprayed some wd40 on it in hopes that it just needed some lubrication but that doesn't seem to be the case. Any suggestions on what I should try next? I would rather not buy a whole new assembly and just fix it myself.

WD40 is not a good idea for locks. You want to use dry graphite as it will dry lubricate everything, allowing proper movement of the parts without having a film that will evaporate over time, which is what will happen with WD40.

Go to Home Depot, Lowes, Dixieline, or a lock/key shop
ask for some powered graphite, it comes in a squeeze tube

NOTE:
it is best to tap out a bit onto the key & insert it in the lock, it will stain your fingers, but comes off with WD-40 & then soap
rotate the key a couple times, then do it again

I use a sharp pointed tool, like an awl to open the lock & then just give 1 quick shot into the locking mechanism, then i put a bit onto the key & insert it, then work the key around & put a bit more onto the key & do it again IF necessary.
You can put too much into the locking mechanism & cause it to really jamb up

I do this to all of my locking mechanisms a couple times a year

Thanks for the help guys. I'll pick up some powdered graphite and apply within the next couple days.

I also had the same problem. I took it to the Dealer for Warranty repair and was told that the Latch Mechanism that unlocks the Tailgate was bad. They supposedly ordered the part and said Chrysler sent the wrong one. I still haven't heard back from them when they got the correct part.

No, I didn't think about that until reading this. What they said is the Lever that attaches to the Key Tumbler was bad. Now I don't know how many different types of locks are on a 2010 Ram, but I think they are actually giving me a bunch of BS.

I had the same issue. Took it in for a warranty repair and they replaced it. Happened about one year in to ownership.

It is strange that they can't find a locking mechanism or at least the lock tumbler part of it
I don't believe that the mechanical lock has changed 2009 -2012

electric locking mechanisms may possibly be different

inside of the tailgate, this mechanism is what allows the Tumblers to work
the 2 red clips hold the rods that go out to the sides of the tailgate

this is the one that comes on the Ram that does not have a lockable tailgate

damn, sorry about the oversized image
