Talked to my dealer that does the maintenance on my truck over here in the Netherlands and they said 5W30 is safe to use. I trust their opinion (i've worked there, know who works there and I know the owner and his family).
One of the mechanics explained to me that the temp. in which you use your vehicle plays a big role. Chrysler uses the 5W20 oil
in the HEMI engines to play the safe card, the RAM truck is officially sold in the US, Canada and I believe Mexico. When you look at these countries temperature wise, it is one extreme (Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Nevada can get freaking hot) against another (Alaska, Canada, Michigan can get extremely cold). To make sure that the Hemi VVT system works in the 1500 models in all conditions, they use the 5W20.
The number for the letter W: the lower the number, the thinner the oil
at low temperatures (important in cold starts). The second number after the letter W: the higher the number the thicker the oil
continues at high engine temperatures (important in the summer).
In my case (Low 23F - 82F high) 5W30 will work fine. Yes I know that beside the temp. factor other factors also play a role, as long when I (and you, when you live in the same temp. range) use a good quality full synthetic 5W30 there is no harm done. When you use a cheap ass 5W30, it will become a different story.
