Ajkirton has eloquently and to my satisfaction answered the why the difference question, I should have read further down.

I found this from a service tech answering oil PSI question.
According to Chrysler's dealer service information, normal hot engine oil pressure on the 5.7 engine used in their trucks is 4 psi minimum at hot idle and should be between 25 to 110 psi at 3000 RPMervice manual for 2012 Rams.

Wow, That is HUGE swing in oil pressure!
When studying Viscosity and fluid dynamics you will find that the viscosity isnt simply a flow rate, it is a flow under pressure and/or impact rate. In the case of a higher load on the motor, this viscocity is also somewhat of a dampening rate between parts. Using the thicker oil will protect from said impact better than the thin oil, but may have some floew characteristics that arent as good as the 20weight oil.

Take some water and pour it on your desk hit it with a hammer and you will have actual contact between the desk and the hammer. The water will displace at an extremely high rate because of its fluidity. Do the same experiment with some slime (the kind you get out of a candy machine). You will notice that the fluid that is much thicker (viscosity) will displace at a much slower rate inturn limiting the actual part to part contact (hammer to desk)

Very interesting, Having a 4.7l with no MDS and running Full Synthetic oil, would it not be (even if it compromises 1% fuel economy) good to run a 5w-30 in that engine than a 5w-20?

That depends on how tight your tolerances are on the motor. Engines have come along way over the years and the tolerances are much tighter. Due to that the lower weight oil may have a better flow characteristic.

Remember that our motors are not rated for the towing that the 2500 and 3500 are.

OldHP: The dealer back in Texas is a 5 star certified Chrysler dealer and assured me they only used the oil recommended by the instruction manual, not seeing the oil change up close i'll have to trust them on their word.

Talked to my dealer that does the maintenance on my truck over here in the Netherlands and they said 5W30 is safe to use. I trust their opinion (i've worked there, know who works there and I know the owner and his family).

One of the mechanics explained to me that the temp. in which you use your vehicle plays a big role. Chrysler uses the 5W20 oil in the HEMI engines to play the safe card, the RAM truck is officially sold in the US, Canada and I believe Mexico. When you look at these countries temperature wise, it is one extreme (Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Nevada can get freaking hot) against another (Alaska, Canada, Michigan can get extremely cold). To make sure that the Hemi VVT system works in the 1500 models in all conditions, they use the 5W20.

The number for the letter W: the lower the number, the thinner the oil at low temperatures (important in cold starts). The second number after the letter W: the higher the number the thicker the oil continues at high engine temperatures (important in the summer).

In my case (Low 23F - 82F high) 5W30 will work fine. Yes I know that beside the temp. factor other factors also play a role, as long when I (and you, when you live in the same temp. range) use a good quality full synthetic 5W30 there is no harm done. When you use a cheap ass 5W30, it will become a different story.

You are correct in stating the first number is for the cold oil rating for start up. It is the viscocity level when the oil is cold, but the second number is for when the oil is at operating temperature. It has nothing to do with exterior temperature.

the oil actually thickens as it gets hot. I cant remember what they use, but the molecular makeup of that additive will expand up to 1000 times over a standard oil molecule. They use combinations of this to create these viscosities. When that molecule is cold it will coil up to roughly the size of a standard oil molecule.
