Thanks, I think mine is in a constant state of "improper operation"
If it wasn't for multiple websites stating they don't aknowledge MDS operation such as mine as "abnormal" I would have brought it in for repair a long time ago. I'll definetly try a 5W30 soon. What do I have to loose? Maybe it will work as advertised.

All things considered I think when my 2013 comes in I will run the 5w20 until I can tune it and shutoff mds. Once I can shut mds off I will swap to 5w30.

My 01 Taurus with Duratec V6 wanted 5w20 as well. I used 5w30 once and noticed a slight decrease in fuel economy. Will I do the same for my Ram? Probably not until Asur runs it in his Ram and says it's ok

I'm averaging a little over 5000kms per oil change using full synthetic in my Ram. I am a die hard 5000km oil change guy. Dinoco for everything up until my Ram. Never an issue. Put 238,000kms on my 93 Explorer with the Ford 4.0L V6 POS. 10w30 changed every 5,000kms. It ran like like new (ie. like a dog) when I traded it in. I have an 87 BMW 325is. BMW says 20w50. That is all that has been run in that car (have documentation since 98) and it has 308,000kms on it and runs like a top. No leaks, no burning, have never had to top it off between changes. Also have an 04 Nissan Quest. 5w30 Dinoco every 5,000kms since new. Now has 175,000kms and that engine still purrs like a kitten. You can't hear that damn thing running it's so quiet. That 3.5 VQ engine is awesome.

I think if you run the recommended oil and change it often, your engine could last forever.

Over on the 2013 side, someone is running 0W-40 in his Hemi and no problems with his MDS. Asur-I think you may have posted there under the 2013 Mobil 1 thread.

I think I'll run 5-20 synthetic, but I do have concerns when towing the horse trailer. It seems like anymore, the oil is as thin as water. Power train is warranted for 100,000 miles, and I doubt I keep mine that long. I guess I'll stick with what is recommended.

Great discussion!!

What about a half and half mixture of 5w30 and 5w20 . Would that equal 5w25 and a happy meduim? Im serious!

Lmao, but yes, if you change the viscosity of your oil, you will loose some fuel economy, usually at about 1 - 1.5 % this is why many are stating that if you want to protect your engine due to heavy towing etc, you might want to put in a 30, but if your leasing your truck for 3 or 5 years and wont keep it, don't bother with anything, just use 5W-20 you will save on Fuel, also if you install a tuner, then you will save more fuel.

I think I'll dump in 7qts 5W30 and see what happens. I don't think anything will happen. We'll see. The oil of choice is NAPA synthetic.
Sounds interesting I have to admit, its more complicated when it comes to the Hemi and MDS, I have the Flex Fuel 4.7 with no MDS, so I am not affected by the MDS having issues if higher viscosity's are used.

I have aread over and over while it is ok to mix brands of oil if needed, never to mix weights.

True, I have read that also, but many people will mix brands and that not good, if you have a 5W-20 oil and would like to modify it to say 25, your best bet is you can get special additives to tune 5w20 in something in between 5w20 and 5w30. But its finding those additives it might not be worth it.
