Default Oil in the HEMI

Anyone know why the 5.7L in the 1500 recommends 5W 20 and the 5.7L in the 2500 recommends 5W 30?
Does it have anything to do with MDS?

Yes, it's because of the MDS.

Ok, I just changed the oil in my truck and I had picked up 5-30 after reading the owners manual. It stated to use 5-30 for the 5.7 2500 and it also stated to see cap. Well, I bought the 5-30 oil according to the manual and my cap has 5-20 on it. Now it's setting in my driveway and I afraid to use the 5-30 that is now in it. I didnt think it would matter but now I think I should drain out the 5-30 and purchase 5-20. Any thoughts?

LOFShadow, You have wrong oil cap.If you in fact have a RAM 2500 with the 5.7 HEMI you don't have the MDS cylinder dropping system so the 5W30 is correct for your truck.

I thought it might be the MDS, the father in-law bought the 2500 with the Hemi and told me today that he took 5W30. He told me as well that twice the dealer has put in 5W20 and he made them drain it both times.
Cheers guys.

It thought as much. The father in-law has the 2500 with the hemi and he said today that his take 5W30 so it got me thinking. He also told me that twice the dealership has put in 5W20 and twice he got them to drain it.
Cheers guys.

It's in the Owner's manual.

Quote:
NOTE: For 2500/3500 trucks with a 5.7L engine operating under a gross combined weight rating of 14,000 lbs (6 350 kg) or greater, SAE 5W-30 engine oil is recommended for all operating temperatures.
5W-20 can be used if your combined weight is under 14,000 lbs.

So, if you have a 1500 and drive with MDS off, should you use 5w-30? Just curious.

Judging by the other quotes, if you are driving with a combined weight of over 14,000lbs all the time with MDS 5W30 might be the way to go, but even with MDS off if you are driving with less than 14,000lbs then 5W20.

I would check with the dealer first though, and if they are anything like the ones near me they will most likely not give you a straight answer.

So it probably wouldnt hurt my 2500 5.7 to run 5-30. I will contact Ram or maybe my dealer as I would like to make sure. I am not sure what MDS is, but I will research my book a little more. But why is it so difficult just to fugure out which oil to put in my truck? I love my truck but this kinda silly. Thanks for the input, as it really helped. I will post what I find out.
