Default testing the alternator

Where do you put the leads, where do you set your multimeter on and what reading should I get... I have good voltage on battery while driving, good voltage right after stopping, 14 volts while running at idle and 12 without engine running, but let it set for a bit and I have a draw somewhere and I just wanted to start with testing the alternator... Thanks

On older vehicles, i just start it up, then disconnect the negative battery cable, if it keeps running, i try the headlights for a little bit, if still runs the problem is not the alternator

checking for parasitic draw
