As he stated, most of the 1500 grill guards mount the same, most are more for looks, but do what they need. They won't compleatly stop a deer, they will fold and ruin your fenders. But while Scrappy is sitting in the middle of the country waiting for a tow truck, your truck will still be driveable.
I personally really like the Go-Rhino posted above, I plan to put one on my sport in the near future. I think they look better than a bull bar and add more function. Anyone that thinks a bumper replacement on a 1500 will stand up any better is just delusional, it won't be made of anything strong enough to stop much of anything. If it was heavy enough the truck would be unwieldy and ruined before long.
2500's are a different beast all togather. The grill guard on my truck weighs right around 150-160lbs, compaired to the 1500's 78. I wanted protection for the five plus coolers hiding behind the platic grill, if I lose a fender over it? So be it. I'm betting at most I lose a headlight or two, which is much cooler than a costly intercooler. I didn't want a full replacement due to weight. You have to factor in the weight of everything you put on that truck when you start doing the math for towing.
If you want the look of a full grill guard, I like the looks of the Westin HDX, you can even get them with a winch mount. I have a Ranch Hand on my 2500, paid $459 for it before tax (Local pickup).
