Default Vibration Noise Solved

As info:

I had an annoying vibration, almost a humming noise in the rear of my 2012 5.7 Ram Limited with ram boxes since new. It only occured when accelerating from stop up to about 15-20 mph. It did not occur over bumps, etc----only when accelerating with engine under load.

The dealer checked the truck ( for several hours, multiple techs, service mgr.) and could not find the source. I tried on numerous occasions to find something that could be loose, vibrating, rubbing, etc. with no success. By the way, my dealer has an excellent service department.

I found the source of the noise yesterday by accident. I was climbing into the bed of the truck, bumped the tail gate, and heard the noise. ( Both the dealer and I had checked the tailgate, but did not find the noise .) It had to be hit a very specific way to duplicate.

The source was the torsion rod ( my nomenclature and I assume assists in shutting the tailgate) that runs the length of tailgate at the bottom. The tail gate had to be hit a certain way that would cause the torsion rod to vibrate. As it vibrated, it was hitting something inside the tailgate and thus the noise.

( As the truck accelerated, the vibrations or harmonics caused this rod to vibrate and thus the noise I was hearing).

I could not access inside the tail gate in this area to determine what the rod was hitting, so, instead, I placed foam rubber around the rod through a small access hole at the bottom of the tailgate to stop the vibration. It worked-------the noise is gone!!!!!!!

I hope ya didn't block up the holes on the bottom that allow for drainage of any water that may get inside the tailgate.

The bottom of the tailgate has a water escape provision (drain hole) in addition to the access portal.

Could you take a picture of what exactly you did? I have this exact same annoying noise but it happens more often than just the 15-20 mph you were talking about

I know, but he said he went thru a hole in the bottom.....it may have been a drain hole.
