Default loud whine at startup

Hello everybody! I have a 13 RAM 4x4 with the hemi & 6speed tranny with 4000 miles. I'm experiencing a LOUD whine after startup. Sounds like a tranny or power steering pump that has no oil in it. I hear it the loudest at a cold start. It does quiet down after warm up but never really goes away. The truck doesn't need to be in drive & moving for me to hear the whine but its present then too. It's actually pretty embarassing to have a great looking truck & have it sound like that. Anyhow, is anybody else having that sound? I'm thinking about taking it to the dealer but would like to know beforehand if its a normal thing. Thanks in advance for your input!

Mine also does it at start up when cold but goes away after 30 seconds. If you go to the dealer about it and find anything out let me know.

So when I got out of work this morn I started my truck and the whining sound was the worst I've ever heard it. Decided to go to my dealer to listen to a couple other trucks start up. Not one of the 3 I started sounded like mine does. They all had the hemi cold start tick for a second or two but that doesn't concern me. Now I have a service appt next Tuesday. I sure do hope I don't have a bad tranny. I must have drivin a good 4-5 miles before the sound quieted down this morn.

I know on my 2010 I had a similar problem the dealer replaced the belt tensioner/idler wheel and the belt it solved the problem on mine, I think you may actually see a number of threads on this forum regarding the same thing.

Hopefully this helps you?

I never even thought about it being a pully. Can't say I've ever heard one that sounds like this. The bad ones I've heard have always just squealed or chirped. I'll have to look on here for info on that. Thanks for that idea!

I had the same problem earlier this week, but told the kids to get out if the truck.

Sorry, couldn't resist! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

My service appt was this morn. Just like any other day, I started my truck, heard the loud whine. I headed to my dealer to drop it off. Was told they would call as soon as they have any info. Even though I'm a 3rd shifter I wasn't able to sleep most of the day only because I didnt want to miss the phone call. They hadn't called as of 4:30 so o called them. Now they are telling me they started my truck several times today but heard nothing. I reminded them that I hear the whine every single time I start it and can hear it standing 75ft away. Now they are keeping it overnight to "try" again Wednesday morn. I had a feeling they were gonna try giving me the runaround. I suspect I'm gonna have to stop being so friendly with them.

Is your truck the Black out edition? I am looking at a 2014. I have read some other threads about the paint on Black out edition.

@Fullmetal, yep, black out edition. I looked over the whole truck VERY good before I accepted it, paying very close attention to the paint. Besides the very slight orange peel that production vehicles have, the paint was flawless. I couldn't ( and still cant) find any swirls, dirt under the paint, different shading, nothing. But with that being said, I did notice another one on the lot that had a spot on the pass front fender that looked as if the metal had been sanded pretty roughly and then just painted right over. I could almost feel the grooves in the metal. I guess you'll just have to look it over really well in good light.

So I was back at the service dept again this morn. I requested to go with the tech when he starts up my truck since he claims to not hear any noises. To my surprise they sent the tech, another tech, and the service manager out with me. And sure enough, the loud whine was there as soon as it started. The service manager immediately looked at the guy who claimed to not hear it. I asked if i was right to think the noise isnt normal. The manager said "No, that is not normal" while still glaring at the tech. Now i just gotta wait to see what they do about it...
