Default Last words!?!? Torsion keys or just crank them?

I'm collecting my parts for replacing my rack and pinion for my 2003 1500... I'm leveling while I'm at it because I'm going to get an alignment.... 2 birds 1 stone!

I need to know the best route... Keys or turn the bars?

Any replies will be very helpful

Welcome to the forumz! There is a wealth of info and helpful, enthusiastic members here. If you haven't already, pop over to the Newbie Check-in and introduce yourself.

As to your question, you are likely to find some differing opinions. I searched and searched and read until my eyes bled on the topic before I leveled and this is what I came away with.

Cranking and installing new differently indexed keys does the same thing the same way. The only thing different about new keys is that they retain the factory adjustment range. This is irrelevant because you do not want to try to adjust the front height any more than you already can with the stock keys anyway or you will cause yourself major front suspension problems.

You may also read or hear that new keys will level without changing the ride. This is not true. Cranking stock or new keys both lift the front of the truck by putting additional tension on the front suspension. The ride with either will be the same. I was worried about this but after leveling I found the ride to be no worse than before the level.

Measure carefully and then remeasure. 2" is about the max you want to try to go without causing problems.

Save yourself the $100 and the PITA installation of new keys. Crank em and go!

That is the way I'm leaning... I hope I can fit 33s with the two extra inches... Thanks for the response, it helped for sure!

My friend has 35 inch mickey thompsons on his 03 with the keys cranked... Needed offset rims and spacers to prevent rubbing.

The stock 20" tire size is 33". You should be able to clear 35x12.50's with the level.

That's not what I would expect to hear. There are plenty of guys running 305's and 12.50's and I've even seen a couple running 325's on leveled but otherwise stock 02-05 trucks. I don't see why your friend would have needed rims with less offset or spacers, let alone both, unless he was running something wider than 12.50.

Well I am pretty sure he threw on the rims for a better look, uses the stock 20's as his winters for plowing. He did need spacers for the rubbing issue. They are wide MT mudders.

I'm willing to do spacers but I can't do rims... Tires are expensive enough... I have the 07 20" Big Horn rims (they came on other models and years) painted black to match and I'm actually happy with the wheels... Much better then the stock 17s... But anyway I'll post a pic with the leveling when I'm done... To bad some hard work will go unnoticed (the rack) thanks for the input fellas!

Can't wait to see the turnout.. good luck with it all.

Also wish my stock 17's were 20's.. Well when I get 35's. plan to get nicer rims anyways.

I was lucky to find this thread, I had looked on other forums and there is a whole bunch of different opinions on what to do.

I have a 05 RC GoManGo Daytona and have been going nutz since I've bought it. I had a 99 2500 Quad Cab Diesel before this and I miss the factory height that it had. My problem is that I don't know which way to go - lower the back to level the truck or raise the front and level it this way. Problem is that I don't know how much to raise the front to level it - I can't afford to have a shop do the work as I've been out of work since 09 but I do have some friends who are outstanding mechanic's. If just adjusting the key's to 2" is max I'm not sure how close this would come to leveling the truck though...

First off, your truck is a 4x4 right? If not, none of this matters to you as the 4x2 trucks don't have torsion bars.

Secondly, I personally think about 1.5" of front lift is enough to attain the level look. It will not measure dead level with only 1.5" of lift but in my experience trucks that measure dead level front to back often appear to be nose high. Lifting the front this way is super easy and fast and can technically be done for the cost of an alignment (~$60-85?). If you go 1.5 or 2" though I would recommend new front shocks if you can find some that are a tad longer than stock(~$60-100). Lowering the back is a little harder but still not difficult at all. Quality lowering shackles can be had for about $75. You might be able to just install the shackles and be satisfied. However, you may still want to adjust the front a little bit along with the shackles to fine tune the stance in which case you would still need that alignment but not longer shocks. Hope all that helps some, lol.

Let us know if you pick a route and have questions. I have gone both of these routes (lifted front and now lowered back and front) so I'm fairly familiar with them. Just FYI, my sig pic is with the lifted front not as it sits now with the shackles.
