Default what class hitch do i need

I need to pull a small two horse trailer with two 800 pound ponies in it.

I'm not sure the weight of the trailer. It has "hydraulic tongue brakes" as I was told.

So what class reciever do I need? I think the ram 1500 comes with a class 3 but I was told that only pulls 3500 pounds?

My truck is rated to 6900 or something in that ball park.

For larger trailers, a Class III or IV hitch is recommended. The Class III hitch has a sturdier attachment and a larger, 2-inch receiver tube, and is often found on full-size pickups. It can handle up to 8,000 pounds, with 800 pounds of tongue weight.

Class IV
The Class IV hitch also uses a 2-inch receiver box, but sturdier construction allows its capacity to go up to 10,000 pounds and 1,000 pounds of tongue weight. Class IV hitches are traditionally only found on heavy-duty pickups that are rated to tow that much weight.
My ram 1500 came with a class 4 so im good to go on most

I have a 2009 Ram 1500, they only came from the factory with Class 4 hitch receivers
dealerships may have put on Class 3 setups ??

See for yourself, the differences between hitch receivers
this site has more information about towing then any other site

My 2010 has this code in the build list
"XFUS Trailer Tow w/4-Pin Connector Wiring "

There is no indication anywhere in build list of what type(class) of hitch.

For the 4th gens it is easy to tell. If you look at the rear bumper and you have a rubber protector on a large bolt that is attached to the bumper it is class III.

The class IV is all frame mounted.

My '08 has the Class IV installed. I was pretty blown away. But it was short lived because my truck is rated at 3800 GVWR towing capacity. The Class Rating is clearly marked on the receiver and upon inspection the hitch is frame mounted. I can only guess that the truck was factory ordered with the factory mounted hitch and tow package. Been looking to increase the tow rating by at least 100 lbs but everything I have read points out that without some serious mods there's really nothing I can do. Enjoy the Journey! Lou.
