Default Modify rear end for extra towing/weight

Gentlemen - I have a 2007 2500 4X4 5.9L Cummins. The rear end is the 3.73.

Right now I tow a Keystone Cougar Model 244. It is approximately 9,500 gross weight. I pull it like it's not even there. Absolutely no issues at all.

I am retiring in 2 1/2 years and in preparation for that blessed event, we are researching longer 5th wheels which would make full time living a little more comfortable. The current 5th wheel is limited in refrigerator size and storage capacity. For 4 days weekends and such, it has served us well for almost 10 years.

I have seen so many formulas used in figuring out what trailer weight you can pull, pin weight for 5th wheels, etc. My preference is not to trade my truck in for a 1 ton (although I am sure I will stay with Dodge and the Cummins. I have been pricing out 1 ton springs and air shocks to add to the total pin weight capacity.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of someone upgrading to 1 ton leaf springs and air shocks? The 1 ton should give me around 400-500 more pounds for the pin box weight and I believe the air system should add around 200 pounds. I do know I'll have to upgrade my tires (Michelin ATX's, 5,000 lbs per tire, okay, maybe not), I am more concerned about stopping power. I can tow 17,000 lbs, but stopping that much weight is another story. I have no intention of "maxing out" the trucks capabilities. Just add 500-700 more lbs to the pin weight capability.

Thanks in advance.

Cary

You could either add a leaf or do airbags. As far as stopping, if the trailer brakes are working, you'll have no problem. When my 1500 was new, I had Dodge dealer put an extra leaf, and, having torsion bars it was easy to level. Dealer installed Rancho 9000's. It tows awesome for a half ton! Last week, I towed a Ford wrecker truck on a big fifth wheel for about 150 miles, only guess the towed weight was 16,000 lbs or more with a hemi 1500 4x4QC. Couldn't believe how easy it towed! My friend's Cummins 2500 was down with a VP44 pump failure. As you say, it's towing the Keystone like it's not there, well, it's a Ram!

Thanks Hydrex - I may have to do that math think before I feel comfortable purchasing a $65K 5th wheel. I know it's bad to say but I just don't trust RV dealers to give me the honest to goodness truth.

Thanks again.

Air bags are a great addition. I have the Firestone's w/controler on my Dodge and love it when pulling our camper. I know you said you won't max the truck out, but just watch the weight, it is really easy to add way to much with them and think you will be OK until you can't stop or all that weight behind you starts pushing you around, and that's on dry pavement. These Ram's make it to easy to think you can with the power they have. Just be careful.
