Default Let's talk tow/recovery straps...

Anyone have any recommendations for a pair of decent [quality] tow straps?

I'm hoping never to use them but ,IMHO, it's one of those accessories that a pickup owner should have stored somewhere in his ride.

I've heard/read that Rugged Ridge makes high quality one. Anyone have any experience?

Input appreciated.

if your looking for a strap you only plan to use once in awhile as needed, check into your local fire department. Old hoses from them make excellent recovery straps, and you cant beat the price as they will most likely thank you for taking them!

Old fire hoses go out of service for various reasons but the predominant reason is they no longer meet [stringent] NFPA standards due to "quality" concerns. A fire hose that's been placed out of service may look great on the surface but you [and I] have no idea what it looks like on the inside.... hence placing a huge question mark on it's longevity among many other areas. I would never use an old firehose for towing purposes. Old, retired fire hoses make great wall cushionings for anti-dings on apparatus' doors at the firehouse, excellent extension ladder footpads/heels/spurs and outstanding plyometric and/or calisthentic accessories for getting is shape. But an out-of-service fire hose should NEVER be used for towing purposes.

Yes, the firefighters will thank you for taking them off their hands as they do nothing more than take up room in an all-ready cluttered firehouse; but next time tell him why you want it [as a recovery strap]. He'll take it right back off you for, if nothing else, liability reasons.... at least he should.

Oh, and I'm a career firefighter.

Anyone else have any other recommendations?

What was the tow capacity on the straps you purchased , how long are they and was it a hook or looped end?

In my opinion spend the100 bucks and buy a 6" recovery strap. They are loop ended and rated for plenty of pull. (dont know the actual rating off hand) I have one that I keep in the truck and it has pulled many trucks off the beach, heck it pulled a dually with a gooseneck loaded with a one ton duramax running 36" tires with a broken steering box two miles down the beach. no signs of stress yet. Again my opinion also try to get a loop end because in the case of failure it is only strap flying not metal hooks, also invest in a clevis or some type of heavy duty hitch (make the strap the weakest point) to save the truck or trucks

Below's what I ended up purchasing for my truck.

I have no tow hooks on the front.

All parts are of excellent quality.

The small strap is for my side business.

I have the el cheap O strap from Harbor Freight stuffed under my seat and it has always worked for me. I think it was $10 on sale.
