Default Spark Plugs?

I put new spark plugs in my 5.7 a few weeks ago. the old plugs i got 17mpg city and like 22mpg highway. now with the new plugs i get like 12 and 18mpg. Put same plugs that were in it back in and made shure gap is right. I heard that your supposed to reset the ecu/pcm when you do a plugs on these. Is their any truth to this? or any thoughts on the problum.

That is strange.

First off, you are getting great MPG, I have the same truck when I was stock the best I ever saw was 20mpg highway and that was once.

Now i'm running 35" M/Ts and my mileage was averaging 11.5-12mpg over a month or two and i changed my plugs last weekend and (without resetting my mpg gauge) I'm already up to 13mpg. So obviously I'm running even higher since it's averaging. I know it doesn't sound impressive with those low numbers but my point is my mpg has increased noticeably after my spark plug change.

I wish I had more insight on your problem. And For the record, i did not reset anything

gonefishin776, which spark plugs did you use? Need to do the same but with all the hype on platinum and double platinum or copper, which is best? Any info on those E3 plugs that are suppose to help increase horsepower?

I have yet to see a single study that definitively proves any one plug provides a significant HP gain. Stick with OEM unless your engine is modded to the point that a hotter or colder plug is needed.

I have a 2006 Ram w/ 5.7 Hemi. I just did a plug change at 53K and put NGK 5306 in and removed Champions. I haven't tried a plug change in a long time. But it seemed to go OK. I noticed on the mpg gauge before was 15.0 and after Change it shows 11.1. I don't have any check engine lights . Should I give it a few days and monitor the situation?

I changed my plugs in my truck about a month ago. I went with my dads advice on spark plugs growing up. "As long as they spark, it doesn't matter what kind you get, it'll work." I've heard that copper plugs are the best, but don't last as long. I went with the $2.56 champion platinums. Those were the cheapest I could find and that was already a $56 bill for just plugs. They all do the same thing, so why would you want to pay more? You could spend twice the money and maybe get 1000 extra miles out of your plugs just because the package says "Put the best in your vehicle or you don't love it!"

They all do the same thing. Go with what your wallet can afford.

Plugs need a short compression time to break in, I changed my plugs nd at first my milage didn't change, was still 11 mpg. Then after a 3 nd a half hour highway drive, I noticed towards the end of the drive my milage was up to 15.5/16. So to answer your question, yes just give it some time and you will see a small increase in milage (depending on how bad your old plugs were worn.)
