Default 5th wheel towing

My wife and I are looking to purchase a 5er We have a 2012 Ram Express, all the bells and whisles also has the towing package,HD trans tow kit ,HD tow radiator, regular cab, 3:91 rear axle,20" rims the max towing is rated at 10,400 according to the manual but Im not to sure of that. The 5er we are interested in has a dry wieght of 7900lbs and a hitch of 1400, 34.5 ft
It is a 1/2 ton towable 5er says the dealer. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Greatly appreciated Thanks

pin weight already almost maxes out your payload, add in gear, weight of people and you are over payload rating.

Thanks for the input. I had a feeling the 5er was to much for the truck I guess we will be looking for a smaller/lighter 5er. We are also considering upgrading to a Ram 2500 which we should have purchased the first time!

We were in the same situation .
The dealers will tell you anything to get you to buy the RV ,
I have to agree with previous poster that the Pin weight will kill your Max payload capacity. The 2500 hemi has a payload capacity of 24950 which would give us breathing room on the 1500 lb pin weight .
Surveyor & V CROSS by Forest river has a couple @ 30 ft with a pin weight @ 1200 lbs but add gear ,people, stuff you just have to have &you are right @ or exceeding your Max load capacity on the 1/2 ton
Good luck in your search .

have to agree that if your really thinking towing a camper then at least a2500 is the way to roll , I would even op for the cummin's ,you can almost pull your house ...plus fuel consuption is better , pros and cons But i would think that dragging a 28' foot trailer with the hemi will dran your wallet pretty quick at the pump

I don't want to say this out loud! But, I believe the Ford F-150 Eco-Boost with the max trailer tow package is the only 1/2 ton rated to tow a 5th wheel.

At least it was in 2011 when I was looking for trucks. Just get a 3500 with a Cummins and all will be good!

(I wish I would have!)

Except for the very small 5th wheels, a half ton is never a good choice for a 5er, because as others said the pin weight is usually too much and often the overall weight of the 5er is too much as well. You will want at least a 3/4-ton Cummins and better yet a 1-ton, which will allow for upgrading. Good luck to you.

+1 on 1 ton. Better off too big on pull side than even/too little. Remember you got to stop the thing that follows you.

have you thought of a bumper pull travel trailer? (not really pulled from the bumper just what they call them). We have a 22 foot travel trailer that weighs 6000 fully loaded and love it, easy to tow, not too heavy of a hitch weight (700lbs) and still gives us a place to camp in.

Yes we have considered a pull trailer as are alternate choice it will most likely be the Open Range (light) LT305BH @ 6800 dry and 795lbs hitch weight. I hope this will be as easy to tow as what you folks have. This particular trailer has bunks which my wife has to have for our kids (3 cats) are other kids are grown young adults and moved out of the homestead. Thanks for your input
