Cool What To Do Maintenance Wise?

I just bought a 09 Ram 1500 (5.7 hemi) with 71000K's on it. I just took it in for an oil change and the dealer said that I should have The front/rear diff fluids changed, the trany fluid changed and the spark plugs. I don't know what to do, its to much money to have all of it done at once, what's priority and what can wait? How much are the fluid changes? I know the plugs won't be cheap. Thanks for your help.

I would do your fluids first. The diffs are due around 30k miles. The transmission is usually done around 50-60k. If you have a 4x4, the transfer case is usually done at 30k. Spark plugs would come last in my book. They say 30k for those, but I did mine at 50k and they were still in great shape.

If you are a little tech savy, the fluids you could do yourself and save a little money. On my diffs I just sucked out all of the old fluid and replaced it. The transmission is a little more messy, but still easily managed. The transfer case was just a matter of opening the top fill plug and the botton drain plug.

Yeah just do it yourself over a few weeks, or months. The Z will guide you. Watch some youtube videos too.

And next time you buy a used vehicle have the deler do that stuff as part of the deal.

Whenever I buy a used car or truck I always swap out oil, tranny, diff, and check the antifreeze. Also fuel filter. I had 110k on my 09 and used champion copper plugs from napa $30 for 16 and small shop put them in for $75. I miss my ram boxes I had on my 00 but traded it Monday for a 13 to have the 4x4. After my plugs I was getting 18 to 19 mpg on the highway and avg 15 to 16 mixed.

I suggest that you read the OWNERS MANUAL
the dealerships always try to tell you that things are due, long before they are

here is the manual online, just fill in the blanks & d/l the PDFile

30,000 mile spark plug replace
Inspect the front and rear axle fluid, change if using your vehicle for police, taxi, fleet,
off-road or frequent trailer towing.
Otherwise the manual never reads that the differential fluids needs changing
I didn't see any scheduled maintenance for the transmission, but i may have missed it

Plugs are pretty easy to do yourself, only a pain because there's 16 of them.

If you can do the plugs yourself then I would do it. I made the mistake of taking it into the dealer and was charged $350. Next time I will be doing this myself. I was going to try but reading through a bunch of threads a lot of people are saying its a pain in the a$$. A few of them are in hard to reach places unless you have the right tools. Would be cheaper to buy the tools and change them yourself.

That would save about $300 by doing it yourself.. The major thing to be careful about is to not put any stress on the A/C coolant lines going through the firewall while you are changing the plugs. You can easily break a line on the evaporator and to replace it you will need to take the whole dash apart. Not an easy jobnore a cheap one.. So if you're going to tackle it yourself, please be careful and save yourself another expensive item to replace.

I was just reading your thread and I am going to put my 2 cents in...I bought my 2009 Laramie 4x4 with 60K miles on it and I changed my plugs at 65K this past weekend...I would take Astroman64's advise very strongly...I wished I had read this post BEFORE I did my plug change. It is possible to change plugs if, and I mean IF you are capable of laying on your stomach over your engine and you have all the extensions and swivels needed. This could possibly be done with other ways but this was the way I found best. When it came to the two plugs by the firewall on the passenger side, I did find that the low pressure AC line was in the way of my 3/8" extension, I did move it over about a hair, just enough to get my extension in there...as a matter of fact I actually remember my extension touching the AC line while I was changing the plugs. What happened next was the next day I did not have any AC...try scratching your head on that one?! Here you change plugs and your AC doesnt work!! As an official gearhead I was doing a lot of "WTF?!"...then I saw the AC oil leaking down my chassis...looked behind the expansion valve/block and it was leaking. When I moved the line I must have "unset" the O ring and that was it. Went to the dealer to order the new O rings (there are 4 that I replaced) and I was told that I cracked the evap core and would have to be replaced...if you've ever taken a dash out...you do not want to do this on a Dodge Ram 1500. I have since replaced the O rings and waiting to see if this will fix (wife is driving truck and will return tomorrow). Keeping my fingers crossed...anyways, just my 2 (or now...$2.00 worth!
