I can only say my 09 cc with the 3.92's was much better towing than my 13 with 3.55's. I don't haul anything that heavy but I do notice the gas mileage drop and now in traffic I use the tow mode where I never though about it before. Having done the 3.92's last time from that pathetic 3.21 my 09 came with I honestly wish I had just gone to 4.10 since the truck still drove great and had some rpm to spare. wish I had gotten the 3.92's in my 13 but I figured the 3.55's would be better on gas but I am regreting it.

I have the 3.92 on mine and tow a 26 foot travel trailer every long weekend. It weighs about 5500 loaded. I really like the 3.92's Even if I didnt tow the 3.92's are nice just for a bit better acceleration. At 100kph I think I'm at like 1800 rpm.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I want to swap out these gears regardless. It's not like I drive that much anyway, I work from home, so mileage isn't much of an issue.

The Equal-li-zer WD hitch works with surge brakes, so I've ordered one of those, plus air bags. That should keep her stable. I'm going to try and keep the total weight around 8000#, and that should aid my paranoia some. I'm a little paranoid because I had an "incident" once with my previous truck towing the Sea Ray - a thoughtless idiot slammed on their brakes on the highway in front of me because he missed an exit, causing me to do the same. My recently serviced(like 3k worth of, including all new brakes) blew a brake line and I was lucky to have enough space and quick thinking to downshift and use the parking brake to prevent disaster. I figured it was time to get a new truck so I got the 1500. The 2500 seemed overkill for what I was planning on towing, but then I got the itch to get a slightly bigger boat(well, my wife HAD to have a boat with a shower in it). In hindsight the 2500 would have been the better choice, but that ship has sailed so to speak . I do love the 1500, and it really effortlessly towed 6000# even up mountains. Love the huge 4w disc breaks too, which come in handy when towing boats around thoughtless morons, which are everywhere, but seemingly in large abundance where I live.

You might be surprised what you could get into a 2500 for price wise. A buddy of mine purchased a 1500 in January and was in the same boat your in about upgrading to a bigger boat. He found a 2012 2500 used that a guy traded in for a diesel 2500. He was able to make a deal this his express and walked away with the 2500 with s loan only 50 bucks more a month.

By the way I used to work for a crownline dealership they are very well made boats.

Yeah, I think so too. Love them and the Monterey's of the same class too.

I'm going to do the gear swap. The truck is paid for, I can't justify upgrading to a 2500 for just two trips per year, especially since I'll be well under the towing limit.

You won't really notice any difference towing with different gears. It does take a lot of stress off the drive line with lower gears, but most of that is just when taking off from a dead stop. My 3/4 ton has 4.10's and I wish I had the 3.73's.

a diesel vs gas are totally 2 different entities, I can see why you would want 3.73's because your already making tq...your confusing the op from a totally different perspective..

No not really. He could have say 2.50 gears in his truck, and still get that load moving. It just stresses the drive train a lot more. Diesels make a lot of torque, but the only factory gears were 3.73 or 4.10. My truck with the diesel could have a much higher gear, but from a dead stop and that kind of torque, it stresses the drive line, such as axles, rear gears, drive shaft, transmission etc.

bingo..you just answered the reason we are in this thread...as a diesel you could use a way higher gear because of the massive torque they put out...on the other hand we need the tq multiplier in the gears to help us move as well as relieve the driveline stress. As soon as we know what his stock setup is, we can advise on his gear setup... I'm different in that I've run 4.56's on 31" tall tires for years because I wanted to get outta the hole quicker as well as tow my boat with less effort. Now, logic says i should have lost mpg's but with the amount of city driving I do, my overall mpg's went up...

Anyone in the Maryland/southern PA area that has had this done, can you recommend a dealer? All the ones I've talked too seem utterly confused and quoting ridiculous prices, when I keep seeing people saying this cost around 1200 per axle including labor on various forums.
