Instead of looking exclusively at dealers, try checking out your local off road or hot rod shop.

They'll probably have more day to day experience doing a gear swap, and they may even be able to point you in the right direction for a specific manufacturer too

good luck

Its expensive. You have to take the entire thing apart, put in the new gears, set the thing up, run it a little bit, then check the wear pattern.

Does using someone other than a dealer void the warranty though?

I'm fine with it costing up to around 2500, but over that, screw it, it's not worth it for towing my boat twice a year. The current owner of the boat said that the boat trailer combo is 7900#'s dry.

After towing boats and trailer for more years than I want to remember, here's my .02. Go to 3.92's, and just as importantly, make sure you get a limited slip rear. If you have ever backed down the ramp to pull you boat out and got the rear tires a little wet or backed up and stopped on the ramp that had moss covering it, you will understand the reason for the limited slip. Also I agree with looking for a shop the specializes in trans and differential work. You can get factory parts but I think the labor rate at another shop might be less. However, make sure they know what they are doing--nothing is worse than having to install and re-install and re-install gears because they were not set up right in the first place. I think in the long run you will be a lot happier with the 3.92's, both for towing and for regular driving.

Do I really need LSD with 4WD? I always put it in 4WD mode when on the ramp.

Been calling around a ton today, and totally getting answers in every different direction. Half of the dealers seemed clueless, and were saying they didn't even see 3.92 gears listed in the parts catalogs, called an offroad shop and they were not showing 3.92 gears either. I mean c-mon, it's a STOCK gear, I should probably be able to order the damn thing myself.

Getting a little frustrated, to be honest. Starting to get to the point of is this hassle even worth it.

The main problem I saw a lot with guys that used 4 wheel drive to pull their boats out is that they would leave the truck in 4 wheel drive and go to the top of the ramp and then try to turn(usually pretty sharp) to get off the ramp so they didn't block it for other people. When you turn that tight and your still in 4 wheel drive, a lot of bad things can happen especially on dry pavement. If, God forbid, you find a "good" parts guy it should be pretty easy to order the parts your looking for. If you keep getting the run around, you can PM me and I'll give you the name of my parts guy. Althought you might have to pay shipping for the parts, at least you would be working with someone that knows what the hell they're doing----

Thanks Jay, I have one more place I am trying. They are closed until thursday for some reason this week, but I'm going to call them first thing. A few friends recommended them and said they had it done there for a reasonable price, though different trucks.

Geeze, man, I just cannot get a straight answer from anyone about anything, lol. Previous boat owner telling me that the boat trailer combo is 7500#, and I know that ain't right. The boat is 6400-6600 according to Crownline's specs, and I found out the trailer is around 1800#'s and maybe even 2000#'s. That's really pushing it IMO for a 1500 even with the 10050# tow rating. With fuel(and I'm not having them drain 70 gallons of fuel at these prices!), total weight would be 9000# or more. Not comfy with this at all. Dammit. I really wish I would have gotten a 2500, but it's too freaking late now.

Oh well, I'm just going to rent a 2500 from Enterprise, hell it's only $79 dollars a day, and I'm doing this twice a year to get it too and from the marina. It'll be trailered there, meaning I'll need to load and unload each weekend, but that shouldn't be a problem for the 1500 to handle.

Also, and no one has mentioned it, even if you swap gears, the max legal weight you can tow DOES NOT change, it stays 8750, and if stopped, will get you an expensive ticket.
