Default I think I know the answer but - transmission swat

I'm still rebuilding my transmission and was talking to a guy the other day about it who is in a similar situation (transmission junk) in his 97 RAM 1500 4x4 5.9. He has a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee (5.2) with a junk motor and wants to see if he can swap transmissions. I told him I don't think he can but I told him I would ask. First issue is the 318 vs 360, correct? Even if it physically bolts up the two motors are balanced differently, so that's an issue. I'm trying like hell to talk him out of it but he's all gung ho on trying it and is a nice guy with a family and not much $, I'd hate to see him have two junk vehicles instead of just one. I figured I'd ask the experts. Thanks.

If you have a good junkyard in your area, they can tell you if that swap will work. I think it should. The biggest issue is if they are the same trans. If not, linkages and for sure computer control will not be right. If they are the same, I believe the bellhousing pattern on the motor is the same, and the balance thing shouldnt be an issue, the transmission doesnt care.

Me thinks he would need to keep the torque converter married to the vehicle, not the tranny. RamVan 2500, where are you?

OOH, gonna have to explain that one to me. So yer thinkin the torque converter is involved in the balancing? Interesting. I've been in on some engine balancing, and I've never heard that. So does that mean if you install a new trans with converter the engine has to be rebalanced with that converter?

Prior to 96 the 360 was balanced with the TC IIRC, I THINK in 96 it went to the FP, this is why I was asking. Apparently the transmission is a 44RE, it will mount up but will probably not last long...

^^ close there Snoop ^^ tis the flywheel that is balanced for the 360/5.9 and I've seen it done (the swap). 44RE (E=Electronic v. RH, where H=Hydraulic)

There is a chance the converters are different but I am pretty sure the transmissions are the same. Swap the converter and hook it up.
