Default Bucking/hesitating

Bought a 99 durango (sorry, I know this is a Ram forum but it's the same engine anyways) 5.9L a few weeks ago and had discovered it had a bit of a buck/hesitation that seemed to happen most often at highway speed but sometimes when trying to accelerate up to highway speed. Scanned it and it threw misfire codes for all 8 cylinders. I thought ah that's probably an easy fix with a tune up. Replaced all plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, and a new coil. The next time I took it on the highway it still had the problem. It doesn't do it the whole time but on a 45 minute highway drive it did it for about 5 minutes. Scanned it again and now it throws code 1391 (intermittent loss of CMP or CKP) with no misfire codes now. Think it's the same original problem? And will a new crank sensor fix this or should I look into something deeper?

It's hard to take guesses at a problem like this - checking the sensor patterns with a scope is the preferred way to go and that's obviously not an option here. I would first check the connections to make sure they're clean and tight. Then I would check the cam/crank sync with a scan tool. Anything more than 6 degrees +/- and the sync signal needs to be reset by adjusting the distributor. If both these things check out ok, I would replace both sensors with Mopar parts (I've had too many repeat failures with aftermarket sensors to ever trust them again).

Ok I'll see if I can borrow a better scanner. If the sync is out more than 6 degrees is that only going to show when the truck acts up? Or should that show right away?Some days it doesn't do it at all.

Hard to say for sure. I would want to see the sync when it's acting up though.

Hopefully I can borrow a scanner for a few days then. Took it for a 2 hour highway drive today and it never did it once.

Final fix on this ended up being a new crank position sensor. (I hate dead end threads so I figured I'd update mine)
