Default 2013 Dart or Civic for Fiance?

Hey guys, my fiance currently owns a '12 Wrangler that will soon be paid off, but we are planning to move which means she will need to travel a lot for work so the wrangler doesnt seem like an affordable option for gas.

So we were thinking, sell the jeep and break even on a new Dart or Civic (which would mean she still wouldnt have payments and would save hundreds of dollars a month in gas, insurance and maintenance savings.

I know that this is a dodge based forum so some of you might be biased so Im asking for those that have experience with the Dart Rallye 1.4L turbo with either transmission please chime in. For those of you who own modern Civic 1.8L are welcome as well, but any hate towards the civic because its a honda isn't really constructive so I'd like to avoid going down that route.

Thanks.

I really like the Dart over the Civic. Great design with it most definitely.

I like the dart as well, good looking car in and out, especially with those factory duals and blacked out hardware, however we are iffy about the new model reliability. I have done some research and the dart doesn't seem to bad, mostly sensors go bad but still not much info to go on. There is also the small extra cost of premium gas needed in the turbo.

Looking to test drive both the civic and the dart in the next few weeks to compare but I am just trying to get as much info on the dart since my ressources are limited to Dart forums (which activity is limited from what I can see)

Personally as a former Civic owner, I'd go with the Civic over the Dart, mainly because the Civic is a time tested platform. The Dart where it's most likely a great car is yet to be tested (so to speak).

I've heard that the Dart when paired with the wrong power train options can be quite the dog, so be sure of what you're buying before you pull the trigger. The Civic isn't a power house, they have a well known track record of running like a Timex.

I loved my '08 Civic Si, and I wish to hell that I'd never sold it in favor of my go-kart ('11 Honda CR-Z).

Good luck and keep us informed as to what you decide.

Thanks for the tips, I do appreciate the fact that the civic's 1.8L and 5 spd auto have been around for awhile proving to be reliable. We will be trying the dart 2L and the 1.4L turbo (the turbo our preference on paper) with both auto and manual. I am trying to convince the fiance to consider the '13 SI, but the wallet has the final say.

I've driven both, and from that perspective the Dart wins hands down. I love the sound of that little turbo four banger as it growls away under the hood. The car looks sweet both in and out. The Civic repulsed me from the word go. It felt as unresponsive as the little Chevy Spark with it's 1.2 engine and 4 speed auto I drove a couple of weeks ago.

The only drawback on the Dart is the fact that it has no relibility history, and given its DNA (Alpha Romeo / Fiat), the car does have to prove that it's not the same type of car that was being built back in the days before those companies abandoned the U.S. market.

The tiger shark engine is a design upgrade from the previous 4 banger Chrysler. I believe that the Civic does have a better reliability record, but cost of repairs are higher. The looks of the Dart seem more appealing, and really the only way I'd go for the civic is if it was the SI. No better 4cyl. Sports sedan IMO

after comparing both the Civic and Dart, we came to the conclusion that the Civic Si and Dart Rallye are so close in terms of price (literally just over a $1,000 more for an SI over the Rallye turbo) so she is currently considering the Civic Si as it has a good rep for reliability, good resale value and a lot more HP

I just drove a rental Dart for a week and must say that I was less than impressed. The wife owned a Civic before her current car. It was good quality and rode decent with good mileage. BUT, you have to remember that no matter which make you go with, there are always good and bad cars. The motor on her Civic blew at 32000 miles on the interstate going 75. When we had it towed to the dealership, the mechanic wasn't surprised at all. He knew exactly what had happened and had seen it before. It was one faulty bolt or something that Honda figured was cheaper not to recall. So, everyone has good and bad experiences with every brand. I'd just go solely for which SHE likes the best.
