Talking Project StormTrooper

This is a 2003 Ram 2500 Quadcab short bed with a 5.7L Hemi to start. When I purchased the truck, it had been rolled by some joyriding teenage auto-thieves. More of the history behind the start of this project can be found in my newbie thread...

http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=106363

As it sits now, Project StormTrooper (yes, a reference to Star Wars - but also to the EF-5 Tornado out of which this project was born) is in early stages of development. I'm trying to sell many of the good parts that I no longer need (like axles, wheels, tires, bumpers, glass, lifts, brush guard....). The bed has been removed, the frame shortened slightly to give me a little more room in my garage, the dash and all components in it have been removed (no need for a heater core or AC on a truck without windows). The truck had a 4" lift that is being removed along with the 3" body lift. Also, planning to trim the front fenders (planned trim can be seen in the picks below.

I plan to boat side the cab for clearance, start fabricating a custom roll cage, build an electric cooler into the dash, build a double triangulated 4-link for the front and rear for the 2.5 ton steering axles that will go under the truck. I have no intention of creating a street legal rig. This will be a pure off-road monster.

I'll try to keep this tread updated as I go. Since I will be replacing or rebuilding tools as I go, this may be slower moving than I hope.

If you looked through some of the other pictures in the album, I should tell you that some of the pictures you may have seen there are of the project that inspired mine. Unfortunately, the project owner had the attention span of a 3 year old, so that project was scraped... literally. The good news is that that guy went through so many mind changes and apparently had the money to burn, that I got a lot of ideas and learned a lot of lessons from his project.

Now on to my latest mod... Since I will be chopping the frame off behind the cab, I had to loose that monster muffler. I have a 3" x 18" Cherry Bomb to let the Hemi breath a little easier... That and I just love the tone!

I'm not going to weld it in until I have the suspension finished, so no pics of the install just yet.

Looks good, your project is off to a good start. Not sure how I feel about a Ford towing a Dodge but it's for a good cause in the end so I'll just look past it lol I'll definitely follow this thread to see how this all ends up. Your putting an insane amount of fabrication into that truck. Good luck with everything!

Thanks to this thread I now do not know which I want for a side project. My 60-70's era truck remodel or to build a swamper. Thanks Rook, thank you so much

Sorry MadSoul87... at least it's a good problem to have. If you're into wheelin', I'd suggest the Swamper. With that said, mine is more purpose designed for crawling. Would you be modding the '05 1500?

I didn't get a ton completed this weekend due to weather and family projects, but I did manage to get the steps removed along with the body lift, and planned out the rest of the boat sides (see pictures).

The cage will be coming soon, but before that, I have to finish building my air/hydro tube bender.

Got some new parts for the project. First, some new shoes...

14.00R20 Michelin XL's at ~48 inches.

Then some parts for the two 2.5 ton steering axles going under the rig...
Ballistic Fab Mohawk Kit give the Rockwells better clearance than a 14 bolt and there is no comparison in the additional strength and gearing at 6.72:1. (pictured is the bottom of the pumpkin)

The drum breaks that come standard on Rockwells add a ton of weight and they fail easily once clogged with mud (something this truck will see more of than I care to admit). Best thing to do would be to add disc breaks to all four corners, but that is extremely expensive, so the next best thing is pinion breaks (not street legal, but this thing will not be driven on the road and will not see speeds greater than 15 mph).

I'll be picking up the axles early next week. That's when this project should start moving with more momentum.
