Default Reinforcing a Tonneau Cover

I have an Extang Full Tilt Tonneau Cover that compresses quite a bit when driving at highway speeds. I'm wondering if anyone has ever reinforced a soft tonneau cover with a thin sheet of something like plywood. I'm thinking it would fit between the bows and the cover. It would have to be smooth so as not to wear through the cover and it would need to be able to withstand the heat from the cover. An added benefit would be that it would protect the cover from being torn by cargo.

Thanks!
