Default Towing question

My truck is a 2011 Ram 1500 Sport Crew Cab, I tow a 28ft Jayco Eagle superlite which weighs approx 6365lbs. I have an equalizer hitch with stabilizer bars and a sway control arm attached. As soon as I hook up the trailer the rear end of the truck has some major sag, but once I hook up the stabilizer bars it lifts the rear end up but not quite level. My question is should I get airbags for the truck? new heavy duty shocks? or a timbren kit? I'm very new to camping/towing with my truck and have had all these options thrown at me to help level out the truck while towing

I forgot to mention I'm thinking about putting the Bilstein 5100 adjustable shocks on the front in the near future

I have a 2012 QC 4x4 outdoorsman. When hauling wood I first noticed the sag. I then installed the airlift 1000. The reason I chose these was mostly based on price reviews and warranty. They were simple to install and work fantastic. I've had at least 1500 lbs of wood in bed and truck was almost level. Handled so much better with load. I have seperate lines and also wrote up an install. I also liked the fact that they were easy to take out once installed. Truck rides perfectly with them at about 7psi. When maxed out to 35psi felt like riding in one ton truck, stiff but doable. I also have e range tires so my truck may ride stiffer than yours. Last week I bought a keystone sprinter 266 rbs, 29.5 ft and 6500 dry with 650 tw. I had my airbags maxed when I picked it up and truck barely settled. Guy told me to leave them maxed but I was a little worried with them maxed WD hitch wouldn't be set properly and therefore sway. Trailer rode great fastest I got to was 55mph. I want to air down bags at approx 20 and try again but they worked flawlessly. If your towing or hauling everyday I would go with the TLC or timbrens but for occasional stuffthese work great.

Can you send a pic of your set up, close up of your hitch set up and one of the truck attached. I am thinking when you say stabilizer bars you mean a Weight Distribution hitch and the sway mechanism is a friction style sway bar.

With out the pictures what I am about to say is a guess and my opinion only. Trailer is 6350 dry so loaded up lets say 7400 with a few perks and your gear. That would give you a hitch weight of around 962pds which is taking a hefty bite out of your 1425pd payload. Means you only 500pds or so left for the passengers, any gear you chuck in it, the hitch and fuel. Not the end of the world from my stand point but some will tell you it is.

Before you hook up the trailer measure from the ground to the bottom of the lip of the front fender and copy it down. Now connect your camper and hook up the WD, take the measurement over again and if you are within an inch you have transferred sufficient weight from the back axle to the front axle. If you are more then an inch off try adding another link to the WD and see if that does it. If you cannot get it to within an inch it is time for a set of Air-bags.

I tow a dry camper of 6500pds, loaded up 7600pds, 988pd hitch weight. I have a Reese dual cam anti sway weight distribution set up and have no issues getting the front within a inch of its original ride height. The big thing comes down to how it tows, do you have any of the "tail wagging the dog" effect where you feel tugs from left to right toward the back of the truck? This can be common with rams and heavier loads as the springs which provide us with a much better ride have a little more give and can cause some back and forth motion. Weight distribution should help eliminate this but if your not getting it back to a sweet spot it can cause a problem. As well the tires play a roll, pardon the pun, with that kind of weight in the back your tires should be a LT tire and most likly are. When I replaced mine I decided to go with an E rated tire (10ply), stronger side wall then most 4 and 6 plys which reduce the roll effect that take place from the tires.

In the end, the airbags are not going to hurt anything! I just bought a set for my truck, airlift 1000's. I bought them not because I feel I needed them for towing but for those occasional loads of river rock or lumber that makes the truck squat bad. With that there is no WD that allows me to transfer weight from the back to the front and its not good for the rig. The airlift 1000 kit is cheap, great warranty and was told by many very simple to install.

All of the above are great to use. I tried the TLC and like it to point. I then found tuftruck HD coils. http://www.tuftruck.com/products/dodge/. I then put the TTC-1223 on my truck and have never looked back. The thing I like about these the best is that there is no air tank or lines that you have to run. No messing with psi to get the right ride. There are a couple OP on here that are running them as well and will tell you they love them. I personally think that these are what the ram should have come with from the factory.

Hey Scasselin, I run airlift 1000 on my truck, 2011 Ram 1500 Sport Crew Cab and i tow a 30ft Jayco with no problems. Ever now and then i put a quad in the back of the truck too, and it still sits level.
