Default 8 1/4 to 9 1/4 Axle swap???

I have a 1983 D-150 with a 318, A727 tranny, and Chrysler 8 1/4 inch differential.

I found a junk 1999 Ram 1500. I don't know exactly what axle it has yet...as I haven't seen it. But I'm assuming it has a Chrysler 9 1/4 inch axle.

The Questions:

Can I swap a 9 1/4 from a 1999 into my 1983?

If so, what issues might I be looking at? Will my wheels work? U-Joints? Swap drive shaft? ???

I know in the Gen 1 Rams (like mine) that they put the 9 1/4 behind the 360 engine....but I am looking at an axle from an entirely different generation of truck. Any input would be very helpful.

Thanks!!!!

I am not positive, but i think the 1983 lugs & lug nuts are 1/2"

I also believe that in 1992 the dodge rams had 9/16"

you could check further, by looking a Roadkill Customs

good luck

Your lug pattern is 5 on 4.5". Dodge used a 5 on 5" in 4WD. For 1985, they made 5 on 5" standard for all pickups, so there's your first issue. Second, the threads did get upped to 9/16" like GT said. I'm not exactly sure if the axle shaft lengths changed, but if they are the same you could swap in some pre-'92 shafts. That'd be 5 on 5" in the rear. Add front rotors for an '85 2WD and you'd have 5 on 5" in the front. It's all do-able. Start looking around and you might find an earlier one in good shape that'd be even easier to swap.

The rotor change on the 1985. Is that the only thing that changed on the front suspension between 83 and 85? (Besides rims, lugs, and tires) Did they use the same wheel bearings, hubs, etc? Can I use the same brake calipers and shoes?....or do they need to be changed as well?

The hardware on 2wd stayed the same. Only change was lug pattern size.
