Default 4x4 MPG question

I know this must be a stupid question, but I've never owned a 4x4 before. If you leave the 4x4 in 2WD mode, does it get the same MPG as a 2WD truck? Or is there some additional drivetrain loss that is always there?

My 4x4 hemi gets about 2 mpg less than my 2wd used to get. They are both big horn cc hemi trucks

4x4 will always get less mpg than 2wd due to carrying around the extra weight of the front drivetrain and transfer case AND the additional drivetrain losses from the parts that turn no matter what.

Don't put it in 4X4 while cruising on the road, unless you have auto 4WD.

My 4x2 4.7 Tundra got 17.4 mixed 75/25 hwy/city back & forth to work .
My 2012 2500 Ram 5.7 4x4 gets 15.3 hand calculated mpg driving same distance /same conditions .
I'M happy with that
My truck only has 2300 miles so i hope to see a slight improvement once it is fully broken in & summer blend fuel .
I run the 87 octane with no issues .
Hope this helps
Mike D.

My 4 x 4 Ram 1500 4.7 gets 14.5 in the city and 19. 5 to 20 hwy. as long as I stay under 75 miles per hour....hand calculated... This is way better than my Toyota 4 x 4 ever got.... That includes both a v6 and the I4.

One big difference, I've noticed between my old 4x4 Tacoma V6 and my hemi 4X4 Ram, driving the Ram in 4x4 mode in winter has little effect on mileage, around 16 mpg in 4x4 mode. My Tacoma in 4x4 mode would go from 16 mpg in 2wd to watch the gas gauge drop like a rock in 4x4.

leaving it in 2WD will improve MPG over leaving it in 4x4 auto or 4x4 but the fact that 4x4 normally sit higher, weigh more and have a tendency to have more aggressive tires hurts the MPG.

When comparing stock Ram 2d to stock 4x4 ram then the only really factor is the excess weight of the 4x4 system
