I'm basing it on the weight rating like from etrailer.com :

http://www.etrailer.com/faq-hitchclasses.aspx

Mopar online says the bolt on receiver:

Part # 82213205
Additional Details: 12,000-lb tow rating, 1,200-lb tongue weight rating with weight distributing equipment; otherwise 5,000-lb. tow rating, 500-lb tongue weight rating,

It gets there, but only if you have weight distributing equip.

Here is the one like I bought, the description says class IV:

Mojack thanks a bunch for the info and this thread.

My truck was built the same as yours with the drop a ball hitch in the bumper only. I wanted a class 4 and asked my dealer via e-mail to arrange it with his service center. He took care of it, but with the bolt on hitch. I have a dual axle 6x12 trailer that I haul 2-3 times a year over 1500 miles each trip with different loads and need the class 4 hitch as it would come from the factory.

So since I asked for a class 4 via e-mail and he had them install a class 3 he is working on getting it resolved with the correct hitch.

And too make matters worse I had my back bumper replaced and it conflicted with the bolt on hitch. The only way to install the new bumper was leaving out the top bolt and that isn't going to fly.

It's kind of funny that Mopar never gives a "class rating" in their descriptions of the bolt on style.....and etrailer.com only gives their bolt on styles a class III.?.

I have seen Chrysler official documentation somewhere that claims their verion of the under bumper bolt -on is a class IV. It looks exactly like a Curt class III to me. The Curt 13333 hitch comes with an allen head bolt for the bumper hole and the cover fits flush ointead of sticking up. It also costs less than the Ram factory hitch. BTW, anything that a 1500 is rated to tow can be safely towed with a class III hitch. The Class III hitch rating exceeds the Ram 1500 tow rating.

My dealer ordered the class 4 after I brought it to their attention that it was the wrong receiver. Should be on the truck this weekend.

Yea I'm happy too, there are some issues like the three little dents in the hood I found when it was being delivered to me and just two days ago I found a weird paint mark on the tailgate. So we will see what they are willing to do as the truck has 300 miles on it. But thanks to this thread I was able to give enough documentation to show them they cut the tow capacity in half. So thank you guys.

Since my dealer had the class 3 installed instead of the class 4 I requested, so I have been talking to the dealer via e-mail for over a week now to get this resolved. He has promised me he would get this taken care of but has done nothing to offer me any feed back letting me know parts were order for the class 4 cross member. Hasn't responded to my e-mails for days at a time and once replied "I thought we got this resolved".

So now I am a bit pissed. Yesterday I removed the cheap class 3 hitch via the 3 bolts. I have it in a box and plan to visit the dealership today after lunch. I know where I would love to shove the hitch, but I need to stay out of jail. Should I go over the dealers head and go to his boss with the hitch and toss it on his desk? Either way I want a full refund for the class 3 hitch and labor cost they charged me to do the install.

Yes, you should be cc'ing the zone office on this issue, and send them all information on what's happened to date. A class IV hitch is frame mounted, not bumper mounted. Now, on our trucks, the Class IV hitch also has a bumper support on it.
