Default First Major Repair = First Nightmare

It's times like this that I'm so glad I work at a Chrysler Dealership...

So all last week my '12 R/T (which isn't even a year old yet) was up on my hoist at work with no transmission in it. A little back-story, really ever since I bought this truck I noticed that it had a noticeable downshift shudder on the 4-3 downshift, I never really thought much of it because it IS a Chrysler transmission and I always figured that it would go away as the truck broke in. Fast forward to 8000 miles, its still there.

So last Monday I told my service manager that I was gonna write up my truck for a trans problem and probably get the STAR help center involved. (God forbid I just start working on my truck, because I'm a Tech so its obviously warranty fraud whenever I want to fix my truck) I wanted to talk to the STAR center anyway since my truck had to codes, tsb's, flashes, ect... By the way, if you don't know, the STAR center is just a huge group of people that are there for dealership mechanics when we have problems we just can't figure out, they're there to provide some help, even though most of the time they are usless.

Anyway after looking at this and looking at that on the scan tool while test driving my STAR agent finally told me to go ahead and tear down the 65rfe trans, which is what I was going to do from day one. I pull it out and totally tear it down and I found that one of the clutch packs (2c) was bad, the clutch material started flaking off and the steels were all burnt. Also the LR clutchs were all discolored. And I found fine metal material all through the trans from the failed clutches.

Here's were things get ridiculousness I order up all the clutches and steels in the trans, apply pistons, a solenoid pack, seals, basically an entire overhaul package. I try to order a new torque converter because of the metal contamination I found and the parts guy says that torque converter is only avaliable with a whole new trans assembly, its not serviced by itself. So at that point I have to get authorization from Chrysler to put a whole new trans assembly in my tuck, which they deny right away. So I call up the Chrysler powertrain people and fight with them for over an hour. NO ONE THERE EVEN KNOWS THAT THE RAM R/T COMES WITH A DIFFERENT TORQUE CONVERTER!!! So finally they give me a torque converter part number and tell me to use that, I check it with parts and what a surprise its a normal RAM torque converter.

I fought with Chrysler for 3 full days about this torque converter, and I fought with my service manager that kept telling me to use the regular torque converter. Finally on the third day I reached someone pretty high up at MOPAR and after doing some research he found a torque converter that is only used with RAM's that have a 4.10 axle (rpo code DMF) Which the R/T is the only current RAM offered with a 4.10 axle. I order that, rebuild my trans and BOOM everything is good.

Sorry for the long as hell post but I think all R/T owners should know that Chrysler and Chrysler dealers have no idea what a RAM R/T is and will just put regular RAM parts in your truck.

So to avoid headaches here is the R/T torque converter part number:
RL143188AA

Write that down and keep it somewhere, Ill take some pics of the burnt clutches when I go back to work on Monday.

This is always a problem when I walk into a dealership, I know more about the parts in the vehicle than the service counter does. Unless you want a very specific part and have a VIN to back it up they just seem lost. They can't even look up parts by the trim line, which is a little annoying. I understand that there's a lot of cross-over, but some things are trim specific.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Yea even working as a tech at the dealer its always a nightmare trying to work with the parts guys. They're just off in their own little world, they don't care when you get the part or if its damaged, or if its wrong, they only care that it shows up as sold on their books.

There used to be a Parts guy at the dealership that i use, he would really research parts for me, if he was in doubt, he would get on the phone & call someone he knew.
One day i walked in there & i was told that he no longer worked there.

It was just after that dealership changed over from having a Cashier that took care of all of the money transactions for the Service & Parts Dept. to a system where everyone had to do their own transactions, it slowed down the whole process & customer wait times drastically. 2 of the 7 Service Advisers walked out too

Sounds like you're dealing with the wrong parts guys. I am definitely not like that. I wish I could work for a Chrysler dealership, I am stuck at F@rd

This is why I stopped workign for dealerships. Had this been someones truck that didn't work at that dealership, they would have a normal ram torque converter in their truck when they paid to have the R/T truck with the torque converter. It just blew me away when the service manager would tell me things like that and I'm like, they will have a total different experience in the sport truck they bought. Im glad things worked out for you man
