CaptJon...Nothing wrong with feeling the way you do about protecting ur warranty. Lots of people on here feel the same way as you do about that. It's all good.

Doesn't this set a code? Or do you do this if you have a tuner?

Alright, with as many of these thermostat threads that are popping up, here's some info about t-stats and making your choices

No, you would have to be running a 170* t-stat before you'd start getting the 'low temp' codes. A programmer would allow you to take advantage of the programmer better by adjusting the fan settings.

No sir, it doesn't set a code and you don't need a tuner. The tstat was my first mod in my 09 not to mention it became available before both SC and DS tuners did. Everyone has their own opinions about their warranties so for each his own. Dealer serviced my truck 5 times with the 180 tstat and with no problems no issues about having it. Two waranty issues with trans, one with a/c and two reflash updates. Now if you have a tuner it is recomended to use a 180 tstat but not nessesarily if you're one who worries about his warranty. EDIT: Sry CdnoilRam, while I writing this you hadn't posted yet or I wouldn't have.

You missed my point or maybe you were not trying to hit it. Changing your thermostat will not void your warranty completely. You will always be able to get warranty work on everything else but BUT if your engine overheats for any reason or any catastrophic failure of the engine for whatever reason you can bet that the rep sent out to investigate that work order will certainly be checking for those ever popular mods to blame it on. Will they do this? Maybe. Can they do this? Absolutely. I'm not saying this can happen 100% of the time. I just saying that it defiantly can happen and maybe its a good idea for people to know this before making the choice of going all out to change a thermostat.
I have no proof of this but because of this very popular 5.7 engine and the many people looking to make it faster I would think that major warranty engine repairs will be a little more more scrutinized than on say a 6 cylinder.

If your engine overheats it won't be because of the 180 tstat so they can not void your warranty. Some on here will argue this but I say, show me one case where this has happened. When your tstat goes out it's because something caused it to, a leak, slipping belt, whatever. There are also people on here who have the 180 tstat concept backwards. They preach not to use it but they use one themselves. The main purpose for using a 180 in these trucks is to help keep the temps down in the cylinders. High engine temps are the timings worst nightmare. Timing occurs in a 720 degree cycle and it has to be PERFECT...nothing but PERFECT. High cylinder temps ALTER the time when your spark ignites the a/f mixture. Timing meaning WHEN your spark ignites period. The spark has to ignite before it reaches top dead center to get maximum compression to push the cylinder down. If it ignites too early detonation occurs, too late and it speeds aways from the flame. Take for instance a 68-1970 383 Charger (like the one in your avatar) with mechanical ignition. Put a 203 degree thermostat in one or race it with a bad head gasket, tstat, fan clutch, slipping belt, leaking water pump...any one of these things and you're looking at an accident waiting to happen. There is NO knock sensor to tell the ecu to pull timing. This is why that charger runs a 185 tstat. The only thing keeping these hemi engines from running like shit or worse any serious damage while running 203 tstats are the KNOCK SENSORS constantly feeding info to the ECU to adjust the timing. That should tell anyone with a brain that a 203 tstat is bad news for performance engines. 180 Tstats do not add hp or make your truck go faster and they do not have anything to do with your cai temps. They simply help your truck perform better with more favorable cylinder temps that help ignite your spark at a near PERFECT time...period. This info is not a MYTH it is a fact.

203? Wow, didn't know it was that high. I just didn't know how low the ECU would accept before it set a code.

Those stupid engine builders have been screwing us for YEARS with these lousy 195 or 203 stats! I can't BELIEVE all the Dodge Engines that are just blowing up! It is in fact a MYTH for modern day engines; please provide any scientific facts to prove your theory. Engine teperatures will go to whatever they want to; T-stat can be full open at 200 degrees and it won't make a smit of difference what stat you are using. The fans and airflow provide the cooling , a stat is basically just an-on or off switch.

Granted I have an 07, but I cannot stand to be in my truck with the heat cranked all the way up. This includes when me and a couple of buddies took a winter trip to ND a while back.
