Default Computer/brain help

Vehicle: 1998 Dodge Ram w/318ci 4X4. 198000 miles.

Electric mods: MSD ignition and an inline, performance computer chip whose sticker fell off some time ago so I don't know what kind it is. I have been running the chip for many years as well as the MSD ignition.

What truck is doing: It's not starting. Engine turns over and kind of gurgles. However, sometimes it starts right up. Currently, truck is starting less frequently. I initially suspected the fuel pump, but I smell plenty of fuel when I attempt to start.

What I've done:
1) After the truck not starting, it took it to a shop where they replaced the alternator (which I somehow knew wasn't the problem.) Truck started after this work and for a while there after. Mechanic suggested I look at the computer because he has seen the same dash lights come on in his truck as they were coming on in mine.
2) The next morning, truck doesn't start.
3) Later that afternoon, I remove the inline performance chip. Test start the truck; everything is good.
4) Next day, truck doesn't start.
5) Do nothing for the next day, and truck starts all day long.
6) Following day, truck doesn't start.
7) Swap computer/brain with salvage-yard computer and truck starts and runs really well for an entire day.
8) Next day, truck doesn't start. I've switched back to the original computer, and still doesn't start.

Any suggestions where to continue my search? I am out of ideas.
