Default Chrome clads and rail dust?

My new 13 chrome clad wheels have a gritty substance on them in places. I tried goo gone and wax and it wouln't come off. Could this be rail dust? Has anyone else had ths proplem and what did you do to fix it? I showed my dealer and the took pictures of it. I don't wont them trying something abrasive on them.

There is a thred on the chrome clad rims started allready with some good tips and ideas on cleaning them up. For me beacause I'm a little lazy and am not into spending hours buffing and polishing I found that using Wax remover the kind that body shops keep around followed up by spray cleaner and polish that can be found at your local motorcycle shop will relly clean and make them shine!

You could use a Wheel Cleaning Clay.

eg. Griot's Garage Wheel Cleaning Clay

Sonax wheel cleaner is supposed to latch on to the metal grit to remove from pores. Search Sonax wheel cleaner on YouTube to watch it in action.

Is there any color to the substance? If not, it could be just roughness in the chrome, which would not be detrimental to the finish.

Its gritty enough that when you wipe it with a lint free rag it grabs the rag. Maybe they will replace them. I hope so.

That sounds like it's roughness, the dealer might take them in, but the factory could reject the claim. Do you have a pic?

if its rail dust, or brake dust, there are good safe wheel cleaners out there...Iz einszett jsut released a new one this week, Sonax is awesome, but might be harsh on chrome clad, and P21s is a good safe bet. get the Gel version as it sticks a bit better.

once cleaned, protect the clad covers with wax or sealant. use wheel wax, optiseal, collonite 845, collonite 476 or opti coat in that order of effectiveness and durability.
