I've got a possibly dumb question: what kind of wheel is under the cladding?

They are aluminum wheels underneath I believe.

Thats good!! I had an 08 Dakota with the chrome clad wheels. They wouldn't cover them for me. I was able to get them clean, but it took forever. I used a 3m wax that is a cleaner/wax. Lots of elbow grease.
BTY, I just did that to my new truck last week. Had the same thing you were talking about. My last truck I kept a good coat of wax on them for the duration and it helped quite a bit.

I must be old fashioned but I just can't see the purpose of cladding an aluminum wheel...I can understand sprucing up an "ugly" ol steel wheel. I never liked hub caps...

I recently had an old biker tell me to use 0000 steel wool to clean chrome. I was a little apprehensive at first, but I tried it on my bumpers and it worked like a dream. No chemicals, no water, just dry chrome and 0000 steel wool. I recommend trying a small spot first and then go from there.

I wouldn't advise usuing any kind of steel wool on the chrome clads. It does do wonders on real chrome. I've usued it for years.
