I battled with Chrysler on this a few months ago when my differential failed for the second time in two years. I worked with a rep and wanted them to fix it under the terms of the recall that had been announced in the news LAST OCTOBER but had yet to come out yet. I told them I didn't want them basically repairing it without the retainer for the pinion nut. Case manager told me that since the recall hadn't been officially put out there yet that they couldn't do anything about it. So they patched it up, and now I drive around listening for the telltale grinding sound.

Wouldn't be a condition-critical item for me if I didn't drive 40K miles a year, but given the amount of miles I drive, it's certainly bound to happen again. Now I have the letter in hand but they have no parts to fix it.

This is my 6th Chrysler product in a row so I'm a MOPAR guy, and I realize that all manufacturers have their crap to work out, but come on man - this is not a recall on a fog light switch, it's a bit more important to get it done in a timely manner, given the nature of the potential failure, no?

Sigh. Done venting for now.

Man GearHd6. Can I ask what you tightened the pinion nut to? Torque that is.

I went with the old school Chiltons manual torque procedure. Mark nut and pinion shaft, remove nut, add Loctite, then tighten so mark on nut is 1/16" passed mark on pinion shaft. That does require a decent amount of force to get it to that point so I know it's plenty tight.

Obviously that procedure won't work if the nut has already loosened up.

Thanks for the tip GearHd6. I'll be performing the Preventative Maintenance procedure as well on my 2012 even though Chrysler/Dodge has stated to me my VIN does not require the recall.

My letter was waiting at home after I got back from dealership for maintenance. The service guy told me about the recall - says he has had 50 guys call him and he has nothing to tell them.

His manager told him that they have no clue when the parts will be in.
