Default Towing with a 2012 ram 1500

Hey all! I have a 12' ram 1500ST 4x4sb with the hemi and I am considering a new travel trailer. In the past I have had different half ton trucks and they have not been really good at pulling any weight. They get up to 40 or so easily after that they seem to be working really hard to go any faster. I am not sure what the gearing was. The real question is the trailer is going to be a 2013 Kodiak 242resl (28ft total hitch to tail) and 5000lbs empty and 460 tongue weight. My truck has the factory brake controller and I have a WDH hitch. I live in Nevada and there are some little hills here called the Sierra's so there is some climbing to do. My question is. Any problems with pulling this ?

Hemius Maximus is my pride and joy and I don't want to kill it so if any feel that is too much weight or I need to make adjustments I would appreciate a response.

Not sure why you experienced problems towing in the past with half ton trucks. Could be too heavy trailers, inadequate gearing. Empty or dry weight is meaningless. Look at the gross vehicle weight rating of the trailer (GVWR) which is the maximum weight of the trailer permitted and represents more closely, your worst case loaded for camping scenario.. Propane, water, essentials etc. add up quickly and you also have to consider any passengers and gear you may carry. Knowing your gearing would be helpful as well and can make a big difference in towing performance particularly with heavier loads. The brake controller is essential and the WD hitch is a plus for you. In the absence of more information, I'll step out on a limb and assume a GVWR on your trailer of 7500 lbs. This should fall within the tow capacity of your truck. If you have the 3.92 gearing you should have no problems, if your gearing is the 3.55, towing performance will drop off some and you may at time experience a drop off in tow performance, but even with 3.55 you should be alright.

After some research I found out that my gears are 3.55s and as close as I can figure the fully loaded weight of the trailer will be about 7000lbs. I know the hitch has a 10000lb cap. I should be ok pulling this over the mountains but was interested if anyone else had this type combo and how they did with it.

I just picked up my new 31ft travel trailer Saturday and towed it 280 miles home. It has a dry weight of 6300lbs and a tongue weight of 690lbs. I drive a 2011 quadcab with 5.7 and 3.55 gears. It towed just fine at 60-65 mph.

I tow a 7000# 30' TT regularly with my 2012 with 3.55's and it pulls it just fine. Went from Dallas to Austin and back a few weeks ago running 70-75 the whole way and it pulled like a champ.

We're upgrading to a Toy Hauler before the end of the year with a GVWR of 9500# dry weight of 5500#. After doing all the math and adding the weight of our bikes, fresh water, batteries and LP gas I'll still be under towing capacity buy over 500#. With a WD hitch I will have no second thoughts pulling that load. My only plan is to upgrade to LT tire to handle some more weight that's it.

Your truck will be fine

I towed an 8000lbs boat + trailer, overall length with trailer was 28 feet. I towed it for over 3,000 miles and decided that I wasn't comfortable with how the 1500 handled. The 1500 was a 2012 with 3.92 gears, 5.7L HEMI.

Keep in mind that "tow capacity" for a 2012 1500 with 4X4 is LESS than 10k with 3.55 gears. Depends on your cab, but the regular cab will come in at a max of 8,900. This is very close to the capacity of your rig. Keep in mind that payload + towable = overall capacity. Payload includes tongue weight, I roughly use 10% of trailer weight, so that's 700lbs. Then let's add a few extra passengers and you've got a payload of 1000lbs. Add payload with trailer weight you're at 8,000lbs. This doesn't include anything you've put in the bed of the truck either.

I ran through these numbers 100 times and I always came to the conclusion that I was over MAX GCVW (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight) by about 500lbs.

If you're over your GCVW, I'd seriously consider upgrading. It's safer for everyone. Just because it can tow it doesn't make it safe, legal, or smart. The 3/4 ton trucks are built for serious towing, even the HEMI model has the same chassis that makes it stronger for towing. 8,000lbs gets into the range of 2500 in my opinion.

I have a 2012 outdoorsman qc hemi with the 3.92 axle and tow a 2013 sprinter 266rbs. My trailer is 6600# dry. I have yet to weigh it but assume 7500 as its just the wife and I. When reading what everyone tells you take into account that tire size plays a big role in this too. I have 17" rims and 31.6" tires (stock goodyear silent armor load e range). You have 20" rims with 33" tires. This makes a large difference as if I had those tires it would be approx the same as swapping for a 3.73 axle. That being said I feel that this trailer would be a good match for the truck but I deff. wouldn't go bigger. The trailer you are looking at is a little shorter than mine, do you have full height interior? i couldn't tell on their website. Mine is 80" some of the light weights are 74-76". If it is lower that will help towing as it is less wind resistance. You probably have around 1600lbs payload which is pretty good. You have a wdh which is deff. needed and will help sway as you have a small wheel base. I am very happy with the way my truck handles the trailer and feel very comfortable driving it up and down hills. As you may know better leave the credit card in your cup holder bc you'll pass everything but a gas station, probably averaging anywhere from 8-11 mpg, especially if you have the small tank. Things you may want to consider looking into in the future:

Airbags(stiffens rear end as some have excesses bouncing when pulling trailer) I have airlift 1000s, I use them more for hauling wood and air them down when pulling trailer and the will throw off your wdh setup
better tires(LT tires, d or e range) I have them and it doens't kill ride, with stock tires you may feel a little sway. run max pressure when ever pulling trailer

I have a 2012 1500 / 3.92 gear with LSD and tow a 21ft. everlite that weighs in fully loaded just around 7,000lbs with a tongue weight of about 700. The tow rating is around 10,000 lbs. so we're good there, but for truck payload of about 1600 we have 700 on the tongue, 600 in passengers and a tonneau cover and side rails and such so we end up around 1400 of payload. I have never had any problems, but we do sometimes put more stuff in the trailer so we have less payload in the truck.
