Default Ignition Problems

1988 D250 318, will not start. It cranks, but no ignition, there is no spark. I have replaced sparkplugs, distributor cap and wires, and solenoid. I purchased an Ignition Control Module, but cannot find the old one for the life of me. Any input would be much appreciated.

An '88 318? That'd be fuel injected, right? If so, and I'm pretty sure it is, there is no ignition control module. The ICM is on carbureted models, which in 1988 would've been only the 360-equipped models. Most commonly, on these early injected models, your issue is caused by a failed ignition pickup, aka fuel pump relay. This module fits in the distributor body below the rotor. It's easiest to change the relay by pulling the distributor out. They can last 2 years or ten years. It all depends on the mileage. Personally, I prefer the ICM units, but they didn't ask. Thankfully, this arrangement was only used for about 4 years.

Now, it for some reason you managed to get an early '88 318 and it had a carb (stranger things have happened) the problem could be elsewhere.

Nah, this things carbed. Its been suggested that it may be something to do with the computer in the fender behind the battery. Single Module Engine Controller?

you sure it is carbed? only reason i ask is holley also made the throttle bodies for the TBI system and they look a lot like a carb until you take the air cleaner off.

Hmm, I suppose I'm not really sure. I've only just recently had the time to start this project, so I havent had a chance to familiarize myself with anything yet. I hope to know my way around by the time summers through.

Starter relay or the steering column. My buddy had an 87 ramcharger and we replaced 3 steering columns and numerous starter relays to handle its ignition problems.

i think the problem would have had to be else ware if you had to go through 3 steering columns and multiple starter relays. you can test all that stuff with a basic multi meter. no point wasting time and money swapping parts if you can test it with a tool that anyone with a older truck should have anyway or you can get cheap enough at a parts store.

Have you tried replacing the ballast resistor? will do exactly what you are describing and cost around $3.00 brand new.

It regulates the power to the coil to start the truck. 12v while starting and then around 6 once it starts.

I always kept a spare in the glove box.

I had a '90 Ramcharger

that for some reason had the BR with the double prongs.
