Default Do I need front tow hooks?

The Sport doesn't come with front tow hooks, so just out of curiosity, when I go off roading, if/when I get stuck, will it be possible to get towed out from the front without any front tow hooks?

There's an off-roading club in my area that often goes on trails. On many of their events they say that to come along with them, front and back "tow points" are required. Is there somewhere in the front to hook up a tow rope without needing those front tow hooks?

I don't have a winch, but plan on buying a tow rope. Other than that, what other equipment should I buy to bring along with me? Anything else that's good to get yourself unstuck? I've seen "shackles" mentioned a few times, but not entirely sure what those are.

If U are going out offroading with a 4X4 group U WILL get stuck! Better mount something up front, tow hooks, 2" receiver, winch, a real bumper...something or your truck will get trashed for sure!

so ill say it, im gonna sound like an a$$, but if you have to ask these questions, i dont think you should be starting out by heading out to do intense offroading :P

but to answer your question, no there isnt much place to to the truck from, other than the tow hooks that wont caues some damage. if you hook under the truck, any upward force will junk your plastic bumper etc. start with tow hooks. If you want more options look at an iron bul bumper etc, has recievers which can be used, and also has the "shackles" you speak of,

hope this helps! and oh yes. dont forget a camera and pictures when you do venture out!

Don't worry, I'm not doing any intense off-roading, at least not yet. There's certain trails which are stock friendly and those are the ones I'll be sticking to. I'll be deciding very carefully which trails to go to.

I see your point about not going out if I have to ask these questions, but without asking these questions, how am I going to ever learn? I'm asking now so that I can figure this stuff out and then head out.

I won't wreck my truck, I'm far more careful than that

I have a sport and installed front tow hooks. All you need to do is cut of the holes on the front fascia and they fit perfectly. Here is my install thread, http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=50811

I actually found your thread after I asked this question. I'm going to buy front tow hooks for sure. I'll definitely get someone else to install them though, I don't trust myself enough to install something that I might need to get myself out of a mud hole.

good to hear that you\re gettin prepared, and for sure if ya dont ask youll never know! also these trucks are very capable bone stock, with a decent set of tires. youll be surprised!

oh, when u get a strap make sure to get a "recovery" strap, not a "tow" strap. the difference is that tow straps have steel hooks, and recovery straps have reinforced loops. big difference, and the steel hooks will act as deadly projectiles if one comes unhooked wile pulling

Yep, I've learned this. The 4x4 group I'll be going out with doesn't allow chains or ropes with metal hooks.

There's a lot to learn. I've been a car guy my whole life.

going out with a gruop like that is a great way to learn, even just sitting back and watching . you will see different techniques and tricks for offroading.
